Eastenders News: Dame Barbara Windsor Dead, Was A Fighting Spirit Til The End

Eastenders alum Dame Barbara Windsor (Peggy Mitchell) has died at the age of 83, Press Association reports. The actress was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2014, but didn’t come out to the public about it until 2018. Her husband, Scott Mitchell, said that she was a fighting spirit til the end.

The fan-favorite actress enjoyed a long and successful career. Her name was made known when she landed a role in the Carry On films. Then, she was cast in Eastenders, in which she played the Queen Vic’s battle-axe landlady. Peggy Mitchell became a household name.

Diagnosed With Alzheimer’s Disease

In 2014, the Eastenders star was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. She had a fierce and determined spirit and this didn’t end with her diagnosis. Her husband said that Windsor’s final weeks were spent the same way she lived her life… “full of humor, drama and a fighting spirit until the end.”

Dame Barbara Windsor Dies

Windsor passed away at a London care home on Thursday at 8:35 pm. Her husband said,

“Myself, her family and friends will remember Barbara with love, a smile and affection for the many years of her love, fun, friendship and brightness she brought to all our lives and the entertainment she gave to so many thousands of others during her career. It was not the ending that Barbara or anyone else living with this very cruel disease deserve. I will always be immensely proud of Barbara’s courage, dignity and generosity dealing with her own illness and still trying to help others by raising awareness for as long as she could.”

Fans are devastated by the news of Windsor’s passing. She was a fan-favorite and really lit up the screen. She was a powerful entertainer that brought joy to so many people. She really brought her characters to life. When she was cast as Peggy Mitchell, she became a household name.
