British royal family news reveals that not many individuals take on a life-altering job in their advanced years. Usually one’s 70s and 80s are a time for retirement, reflection and enjoyment of life’s simple pleasures. But not for Prince Charles who is next in line to the UK throne.

He is 72 and the oldest heir apparent in British history. Queen Elizabeth is 94 and many think she should just let him have a turn in the chair before he’s simply too old to enjoy it.

But is he planning to refuse power in favor of his son Prince William? The royal line of succession has Prince Charles next in line, but at 72 perhaps he would like to enjoy his golden years instead of inherit the hassles of a monarchy?

Could Prince Charles Refuse The Throne When His Time Comes?

By all accounts, Charles may be waiting for many years before he replaces the Queen. His own father, Prince Philip, retired from his working royal role only three years ago and is nearing the century mark.

It makes sense that Charles would simply walk away from the big boy chair but could he, really? What would happen if Charles refused to follow his mother?

Actually, he may have no choice.

Would Charles Be Able To Refuse The Throne If He Is Inclined To Do So?

That’s because the Line of Succession is determined by Statue Law. Which means that if the Queen steps down or dies, Charles automatically becomes king as her oldest child. Period, end of story.

To avoid this scenario, Charles would have to “unclaim” his role as king to the governments of the Commonwealth Realms before either the Queen dies or leaves her role.

Charles would need to request a bill to remove him from the line of succession, thereby passing the throne to the next in line, who is his eldest son, Prince William.

The Law Would Have To Be Changed Before Prince Charles Could Refuse The Throne

It is a long process with all the governments having to approve the change, then each parliament would need to approve.

Next the bill would have to receive Royal Assent before Charles is taken out of the line of succession.

To avoid that scenario Charles himself could abdicate after he ascends the throne, by writing an Instrument of Abdication.

The last time this happened it was quite the scandal, with Edward VIII abdicating in 1936, so that he could marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson.
