British royal family news shows that Prince Charles was given more than £1million in two years owing to Duchy of Cornwall residents who died without a will or next of kin to allocate their money to.
Adding to the criticism of the Prince of Wales, reports claim legislation gave an exemption to the Duchy that prevented his tenants from buying their homes.
It was done under a legal maneuver known as the Queen’s assent and allows her or Charles to vet the contents of government bills and approve them before they are passed by Parliament.
Under this mandate, Charles has two weeks to view a bill that affects the revenues, assets or interests of the Duchy of Cornwall and the Queen has the same right for the Crown Estate, the Queen’s estate and the Duchy of Lancaster.
Royal Family News – A Legal Loophole?
It is being alleged that three bills vetted by Charles disallow residents on his estate to buy their own homes. Some residents claim their homes have sunk in value and they cannot borrow against them to pay for things like social care.
In response a Duchy of Cornwall spokesman said, “Any assertion that the Prince of Wales has blocked or unduly influenced legislation is incorrect.” But it’s not the first time Charles has been criticized for issues relating to the Duchy.
Royal Family News – Is Prince Charles Being Fair?
Charles runs the duchy as a private estate, with the land and its assets being worth over £1billion in the financial year 2018-2019. It is located in Cornwall plus properties in 22 other countries are included.
Ancient rules say that Charles retains the rights to the property of any Duchy resident who dies without a will or heirs, as well as their assets. He reportedly has the power to veto a law that would change this.
In contrast, the property of all other British citizens who die under such circumstances goes to the Treasury.
Royal Family News – In 2018 Charles Netted £868,000 From Dead Duchy Residents
In the 2019-2020 financial year Charles gained £201,000 from residents who died without a will, according to the Duchy of Cornwall revenues report, topping off his total income from the Duchy to more than £22million.
It is said that Prince Charles does not retain the money for himself. He keeps some of it in reserve in case of future claims and reportedly gives the rest to his Duke of Cornwall’s Benevolent Fund.

It sounds a bit unfair, but the residents did choose to live there.
