Royal family experts have speculated for months as to why Meghan Markle and Prince Harry exited The Firm, as the royals are known. Even the interviews that the Duchess of Sussex and Duke of Sussex have given didn’t provide answers. But now a royal family expert believes he knows the answer.
And if he’s correct, all those theories such as racism and bullying are wrong. Find out what this expert believes is the real reason for Meghan and Harry’s exit from The Firm below.
Why Did Meghan Markle, Prince Harry Quit The Royal Family?
The royal family experienced a shocker when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry exited their positions as senior royals in 2020. Rumors swirled as to precisely why the Duchess of Sussex and Duke of Sussex abandoned The Firm. But royal family expert Andrew Morton believes he knows the answer, per the Mirror.
Now residing in California with their daughter Lilibet and son Archie, Meghan and Harry struggled with their position in the family, says Morton. The royal family expert, who authored “Meghan: A Hollywood Princess,” claims that the Duchess of Sussex and Duke of Sussex expected more support and a higher position. But those expectations quickly turned to disappointment.
And Morton feels that Markle and her royal husband also failed to learn a lesson about The Firm: Position matters more than popularity. As a result, Meghan’s and Harry’s popularity meant nothing. “They are popular and what they found difficult to accept was that inside the Royal Family it’s not about popularity, it’s about the position. Harry was lower down the totem pole, and so too was Meghan,” pointed out Morton.
Meghan Markle Mirrors Princess Margaret’s Challenges
Looking at the history of the royal family, Morton compared Princess Margaret and her husband Lord Snowdon to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. Margaret and her husband became highly popular in the 1960’s. But that popularity didn’t turn into higher positions in the royal family, with Margaret and Lord Snowdon instead discovering that they fell “lower down the totem pole.”
In addition, Meghan and Harry quit The Firm because of two key reasons, according to Morton. “They didn’t get the funding they wanted, they felt they didn’t get the support they wanted,” summed up the royal family expert. Could the Duke of Sussex and Duchess of Sussex return to England and move higher in position? Royal family experts feel that’s unlikely.
Meghan Markle, Prince Harry Disappoint Queen
Prince Harry has traveled from California back to the U.K. only two times since he and Meghan Markle moved to California. When Prince Philip died, the Duke of Sussex returned to the UK for Philip’s funeral. And Harry also headed back to the UK for a special occasion. The Duke of Sussex attended the unveiling ceremony for a statue honoring his deceased mother, Princess Diana.

However, Meghan Markle and the couple’s son Archie have not returned to the UK even once. As for their daughter Lilibet, the now-6-month-old was born in the United States. The couple’s daughter has never traveled to Britain.
Adding to the unlikelihood that Meghan and Harry could move up in position in The Firm and get more support, the couple reportedly will be disappointing Queen Elizabeth. She had hoped to visit with the Duke of Sussex and Duchess of Sussex during Christmas, which will mark her first holiday without Prince Philip. Staff sent Meghan and Harry invitations to join the royal family at Sandringham for Christmas.
But an insider revealed that Markle and her husband will not attend. The couple reportedly declined the invitations. “There’s a lot that goes into the logistics and the planning of the family Christmas, so of course, staff know that Harry and Meghan are not coming,” shared the source.
