British royal family news divulges that the royal family have a lot of rigamarole surrounding their day to to day lives. There is the question of who curtsies to whom, who inherits the throne, and what titles are dispensed. When it comes to the latter issue, the monarchy observes a multitude of specific rules as to who does or does not get to be called a prince or princess. Just ask Meghan and Harry—they’ll be happy to tell you all about it.

Some of the rules surrounding this issue can be traced back to Letters Patent by King George V in 1917. In that case he wrote that, “all the children of the sovereign, the male-line grandchildren and the Prince of Wales’s eldest son were all allowed to hold a princely title.” So, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie both have titles, but their children will not be Princes or Princesses. That’s because they are female and that sucks. Forgive our language.
Because Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are the daughters of Andrew, the disgraced Duke of York, they are fully entitled to be called princess. But, in a twist, their husbands are not allowed titles, unlike the spouses of their first cousins, Prince William and Prince Harry. Yep, again, it’s a male thing.
Who Gets To Be Called A Princess?
To further clarify, Princess Eugenie married Jack Brooksbank in 2018 at St. George’s Chapel; she is known as Mrs. Jack Brooksbank. Princess Beatrice married at the Royal Chapel of All Saints in 2020 and she is known as Mrs. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi on July 17, 2020.
But wait, there’s more! Jack and Edoardo were not given British titles of nobility, but Princess Beatrice did gain one upon her marriage. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi is of Italian nobility and holds the title of a count. Edoardo’s father, Count Alessandro Mapelli Mozzi, told the Daily Mail, “Edoardo is the only male descendent taking the family into the next generation.”
“He is a count, his wife will be a countess automatically and any of their children will be counts or nobile donna.”
