The current crisis in Ukraine hung heavy in the air during the visit but the royals tried to show their support in every way possible. Kate Middleton wore a blue Alexander McQueen cashmere sweater in a shade found in the nation’s flag. Both William and Kate wore pins showcasing the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag underneath a white love heart, and William wore a navy suit and sweater for the outing in Holland Park. The duke and duchess are the parents of three young school-age children and they shared that they have been questioning them about the conflict.
The royal couple did not come empty handed as they brought trays of homemade chocolate brownies and granola bars from Kensington Palace to hand out to the members of the Ukrainian community and volunteers they met.

During the visit the pair listened as they were told about the services that the center offers. They learned that significant donations have been given following Russia’s invasion of the country. Prince William told the volunteers that Britain is united behind them and he talked about the shock at seeing war on European soil.
“It’s very alien to see this in Europe. We are all behind you. We feel so useless.”

The couple also offered assistance from their own charitable foundation for children and young people experiencing mental health problems and trauma from the war. After their offer they spoke of how the conflict has affected their own children.
“Ours have been coming home asking all about it,” Prince William said. “They are obviously talking about it with their friends at school.”
He added that he had it difficult discussing some of what is happening day to day with his children, saying that he has had to, “choose my words carefully to explain what is going on.”
