A flight carrying the Earl and Countess of Wessex on their visit to Gibraltar has been forced to make an emergency landing after suffering from technical issues.
The plane diverted its course back to the U.K. after lifting off from the U.K. minutes prior to encountering the difficulties. At the moment, it is understood that alternative arrangements are being made for the royal couple.
Prince Edward And Sophie Wessex Return To London After Plane Difficulties Postponed International Visit
The Earl and Countess of Wessex were scheduled to arrive there on Tuesday, June 8 to walk down Main Street from the Convent to City Hall at 4 p.m. However, the plan has now been delayed due to flight issues.
A statement from the Office of The Governor of Gibraltar reads: “The Earl and Countess of Wessex’s arrival in Gibraltar has been slightly delayed, after their flight was diverted safely back to the UK due to a technical issue.
“Alternative arrangements are being made for Their Royal Highnesses’ arrival in Gibraltar later today and the programme will be adjusted accordingly.”
Apart from the technical issues, there is another thorn in the Wessex’s plans to visit the British Overseas Territory. The Spanish government isn’t happy to hear about the royal couple’s visit to Gibraltar.
At the moment, Madrid is still claiming the territory as part of Spain. Its future border arrangements is still being debated between Britain and the European Union.

Spanish Diplomats Are Not Happy With The Royals Intended Visit To Gibraltar
Spanish diplomat sources are saying that the country’s Foreign Ministry had “expressed its unease” at the visit.
The move has been condemned by the Spanish government as being inappropriate, especially as talks for Gibraltar’s post-Brexit negotiations were still ongoing.
Speaking about the flight, a BA spokesperson said: “Our pilots decided to return to Heathrow as a precaution due to a minor technical issue, and the aircraft landed normally. “The issue has now been fixed and the aircraft is due to depart again shortly. ”We’d like to thank customers for their patience and understanding.”
