King Charles was Prince of Wales for over 60 years. King Charles is 73 years old and the term Prince of Wales conjures up the former Prince Charles who held the role for over six decades. As such he was the longest-serving Prince of Wales in history.

On September 9 Prince William became Prince of Wales and The Mirror thinks that forward thinking William will make his own distinct mark by, “ripping up the rulebook.”

The outlet reports: “It seems William is keen to be a different heir to the throne when compared to his dad.”

William is already making waves by foregoing a lavish investiture ceremony. The Mirror reports that this ceremony is pompy and excessive and in it, “the monarch present(s) the Prince of Wales with the symbols associated with their title: the sword, coronet, ring, rod, and mantle.”

This was the case in 1969 when the late Queen Elizabeth and Charles participated at an investiture at Caernarfon Castle. Instead of going in for the pomp and circumstance, “right now, the Prince and Princess of Wales are focused on deepening the trust and respect of the people of Wales over time.” The couple also differ from Charles in another regard, according to The Sun, William and Kate want to, “create a more cost-effective and less formal team,” which could be a staff half the size. Valentine Low’s new book Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown, notes that a source spilled of William: “The kids run around the office, and he does not want it to be stuffy. If we have important meetings or are going to Buckingham Palace, then, of course, we [wear suits].”

Moreover, a source spills, “William and Kate will modernize how they work. It’s a breath of fresh air…In [the] future they will rip up the rulebook and do things ‘The Cambridge Way.’ They’re trying to work out what that will look like.”

Kate also has big shoes to fill as the title Princess of Wales, is most closely associated with the late Princess Diana, a global icon even in death.
