Royal Family News: How Camilla Could Enrage India If She Wears The 105-Carat Koh-i-Noor Diamond At Coronation

British royal family news shows that the next royal coronation is more than six months away and already the event is generating controversy. News that Charles plans a cut-rate ceremony have brought howls of derision and now the Queen Consort’s, “regalia containing the controversial Koh-i-Noor diamond may be axed because of political sensitivities,” according to the Daily Mail.

There was a time when Camilla being crowned Queen Consort was an iffy proposition itself, not a slam dunk by any means. But this year the late Queen Elizabeth declared her intent that Charles’ second wife be given the title and any backtalk became a moot point.

Royal Family News – What Will Camilla Wear?

“It was provisionally agreed that she would be proclaimed using the late Queen Mother’s crown,” a priceless ornament with nearly 3,000 diamonds including one of the largest cut diamonds in the world, the famous 105-carat Koh-i-Noor diamond.

But now there is anxiety around the use of the crown , “given continuing controversy over ownership of the diamond, which originated in India and is claimed not only by the republic but also several other countries in the region.”

Royal Family News – Will Camilla Wear A Famous Crown?

Charles has shown himself to be sensitive to political issues and at the age of 73 he no doubt wishes his reign to be as scandal free as possible. The coronation will be held May 6, and details will trickle out as they become available. When it was announced that Charles intended to cut the guest list by thousands and do away with lavish excess, royal pundits decried the lack of pomp as a sign of weakness to other nations.

The Queen Consort’s crown was made in 1937 for Queen Elizabeth, consort of King George VI. The Koh-i-noor diamond was used in the crowns of Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary, and reset for this crown.

Royal Family News – Queen Elizabeth Wore An Infamous Crown

The issue is complicated as, “It is impossible to know exactly where the diamond came from, although there is no doubt that it was panned in India. The earliest reference appears to relate to a powerful Mughal ruler in 1628. It returned to India in 1813 and become a potent symbol of power until it was acquired by Britain in 1849. The diamond was given to Queen Victoria in 1855 by 10 year-old Duleep Singh, last emperor of the Sikhs.”

But, “critics point out that this was only after the mother of the ten-year old heir to the Punjabi throne was held prisoner and he was forced to sign it away.”

William Dalrymple, author of Koh-i-Noor: The History of the World’s Most Infamous Diamond concluded, “It is not a small sensitive issue in the eyes of India. It is a massive diplomatic grenade.”
