Sometime in October, the King Richard actor Will Smith invited some of his friends over for a private screening of his new Apple Original Film “Emancipation.” The friends were Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, Tyler Perry, Dave Chappelle, and Kenya Barris.
On his social media handle, Smith posted a selfie picture of him and his attendees with the caption “EPIC night!! Thanx for coming to see #Emancipation. Hope ya’ll enjoyed!!”
Shortly after that, Kenya Barris delighted us with the news of how much he loved the film. He made the announcement through his Instagram account with the caption “This night was truly one for the books! An amazing and brilliant group of friends got together and witnessed TRUE ART.”
Continuing, Barris said, “The conversation after was the effect of what anything and everything we as creatives do in this industry hope for.” In a different post, Barris also wrote “This night was MAGIC and your movie is truly something that will last forever!”
Will Smith — How Rihanna Feels About “Emancipation”
Just like Barris couldn’t contain his joy after seeing the film, so did other stars in attendance that very day. Tyler Perry for one wrote in his Instagram story, “I’m still haunted by #Emancipation, It’s truly powerful, moving and captivating. And the conversation afterwards with this group was legendary. Thank you @willsmith for the preview!”
In a recent interview with E! News, Smith revealed how Rihanna felt about the film and it was no different from what the rest were saying. He said, “Rihanna loved the cinematography. She could not get over the look of the film and how it felt.”
It’s not out of place for Smith to be excited about the reactions of people after seeing his new film, after all, it’s not been long since the Oscars scandal took place. The positive reactions to the movie meant everything to Smith.
Speaking of how the rest of his friends who were in attendance at his private screening of Emancipation felt, the Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air actor said, “The thing that’s great with Black people is they talk to the screen the whole time, so you don’t have to ask people’s opinion, so, I didn’t have to ask anybody’s opinion from the room.”
Will Smith — Will Smith’s Comeback After The Oscars’ Incident
After the infamous Oscars slap, it’s quite surprising and every bit unexpected of Smith to be already back into acting and releasing movies. A comeback like this wasn’t expected from him—at least not this year.
The director of Emancipation Antoine Fuqua once revealed to Deadline that Emancipation has been in the works long before the Oscars incident occurred. “Will Smith is a great guy. I was with him for a couple of years, making this movie. He is a wonderful person, an amazing partner and he did an amazing job on this movie.”
As for how Apple TV+ felt about releasing the movie the same year the Oscars scandal happened, well, they were not so happy about that—initially. Fuqua shared with Vanity Fair how he took it upon himself to make Apple TV+ see reason with him on why the movie had to be released this year and not next year.
According to Fuqua, the conversation with Apple centered on how magnificent “Emancipation” was that one bad Oscar moment isn’t enough to diminish the greatness of the movie because it is Epic.
Fuqua shared that he cited different examples of other stars who have done worse than the Alladin star did and have since moved on with their lives and career to Apple and, eventually they saw reasons with him and proceeded with releasing the film.
It was reported that Emancipation will be eligible for the upcoming awards season notwithstanding the fact that Smith is not permitted to be at the ceremony.
