Coronation Street spoilers, news, and updates tease that the beloved character, Roy Cropper, would be dealing with an addiction storyline in the cobbles.

As the new year approaches in Weatherfield, producer Iain MacLeod hinted at a storyline about Roy Cropper, which involves addiction. He revealed that the making of the plot started when David Neilson declared that his character would never have a phone, so the production made a story out of it.

The story starts in a comedic manner when Roy receives a new mobile phone from Nina during their Christmas celebration. As the youngster tries to convince Roy to venture into the new technology, the man still doesn’t see the point of having a smartphone. However, the table turns when he encounters circumstances that need him to reach out to Nina right away.

“On the back of this, Roy decides Nina is right and he does need a mobile phone. It’s a classic ‘Corrie’ story about Roy and mobile phone addictions,” MacLeod stated per Metro.co.uk. He explained that the owner of Roy’s Rolls won’t be posting TikTok videos but will be missing some opportunities. Moreover, the producer also teased that Roy and Evelyn’s friendship will continue to blossom this year.

When asked if it would go permanently, Iain MacLeod revealed that the production hasn’t talked about it with the network. However, despite the release on the streaming service, people still watched it all together during their timeslot.

“Personally, I like the appointment to view ‘Corrie’ and seeing the live responses online – the fact people come into work talking about it the following day. Unsynchronising people’s viewing of ‘Corrie’ means you lose the sense of community with the fans. It’s good to have the box sets when the show is displaced in the schedules, though,” MacLeod told Digital Spy.

He also expressed his gladness as more of their loyal fans preferred to watch on television at the same time rather than stream online. Moreover, when asked about the hour-long episodes, the producer believed that the storylines have become more impactful to the audience.
