Chesapeake Shores fans were heartbroken when the series finally came to an end on Hallmark Channel. However, it was also a bittersweet moment for the stars of the popular series. Brendan Penny, who played Kevin O’Brien, recently opened up about the finale while speaking of his new role in the movie, The Wedding Cottage.
Hallmark’s Chesapeake Shores and Brendan Penny
Brendan Penny’s role as Kevin O’Brien in the popular Hallmark series, Chesapeake Shores was one of his biggest roles yet. While the hit series is in fans’ rearview mirror, we will shortly get to see Penny in his new, upcoming movie, The Wedding Cottage, which he leads alongside When Calls the Heart star, Erin Krakow.
Brendan starred in Chesapeake Shores as Kevin O’Brien since its start in 2016, the second child and eldest son or Mick and Megan O’Brien. Recently, Just Jared asked him if he was happy with the way Hallmark Channel wrapped things up.
The series ran for six seasons
Penny said it is quite interesting, as they did six seasons of Chesapeake Shores, which he said is a fairly long run for a TV series. He added, “We were very fortunate to get that much time out of it.”
However, Brendan did note that things got a little “tricky with the pandemic.” He said:
There was that big hiccup of a year and a half where we weren’t sure if we were gonna [sic] come back. And then we ended up coming back. The amount of episodes… I think one year we did six, and maybe season four we did six episodes. It had a lot of ebbs and flows.
However, despite this, Penny said what a great experience it was and that the show was fun to shoot and he formed great relationships from the series.
About the series finale of Chesapeake Shores
The Hallmark actor did agree that after six seasons, it was time to stop, saying, “There’s only so much time that adult children, young adults can live at home and have their problems at home where they [grew up in],” adding:
All of them that are having kids and having their own lives. So I think that if they, if they were hypothetically were going to continue on with Chesapeake Shores, I think perhaps it would’ve been more following individual characters as opposed to just the big family house and, and that sort of thing.
Meanwhile, Brendan was very happy with the way Kevin and Sarah’s story wrapped up in the finale episode. He said that season 5 was a bigger year for Kevin, where he felt he had a “much larger arc” and season 6 wrapped it all up.
Penny did admit that season 5 was more fun to play, but that the final season was necessary to end things on a “lovely note.” The Hallmark actor said it was a story he “definitely wanted to tell.”
As previously reported, fans can look forward to seeing Brendan Penny and When Calls the Heart star, Erin Krakow in The Wedding Cottage on Saturday, April 15 at 8 pm ET on Hallmark Channel. Read more about the new, original movie here.
