Bill Roache has been with “Coronation Street” as Ken Barlow since it debuted back in 1960. So, imagining the show without him is just not possible. He’s been part of the cast for 60 years and he’s not going anywhere else anytime soon. What viewers don’t know is that Roache almost left the show at one time when he was no longer happy with what’s happening to his character.
Roache revealed that several years ago, he thought of quitting “Coronation Street” because of his character. He was about 40 years old when he felt “a bit restless” with his character. He’s been portraying Ken for 20 years but he felt as though the writers didn’t know where to take him.
He didn’t like the fact that his character was becoming nerdy. Fortunately, the characters came up with a new storyline that involved Ken, Deirdre Barlow (Anne Kirkbride), and Mike Baldwin (Johnny Briggs).
“This year is the 60th anniversary of Coronation Street. I’m actually in the Guinness Book Of Records for the longest-serving actor in any show,” he proudly said. He wouldn’t have lasted that long if it wasn’t for the Deirdre Barlow affair storyline.
Roache Speaks Up About Giving Advice To Younger Actors
Roache loves being on the show and said that his job is what keeps him feeling young. He also welcomes young actors seeking his advice but he feels like it should be him who should ask for one, he said jokingly.

Roache Pays Tribute To The Late Anne Kirkbride
The actor recently paid tribute to his former co-star and on-screen wife, Anne Kirkbride, who played Deirdre. It’s been five years since her passing but for Roache, “Anne is a constant presence here”.
The actor said that he was able to say goodbye to Kirkbride before she lost her battle to cancer.
“It was a privilege to say goodbye. It was the day before she died and she wasn’t conscious but looked very beautiful. She’d lost a lot of weight but her bone structure was so good she looked really lovely,’ he said in an interview with The Mirror.
“I just held her hand for a little while and wished her well. I’m sure on a higher level she’d have known,” he continued.
