Donald Sutherland Joins Paramount’s Bass Reeves Series As Show To Embrace Anthology Format

The Bass Reeves series, which is currently in production at Paramount, has tapped Donald Sutherland as their latest cast addition.

The project, officially now known as “Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” is said to be an anthology series with future installments set to follow other iconic lawmen who have impacted history.

All We Know About Paramount’s “Lawmen: Bass Reeves”

Per the show’s logline, this upcoming season will “bring the legendary lawman of the wild west to life. Reeves, known as the greatest frontier hero in American history, worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being wounded.

The show has started filming in Texas, with Chad Feehan as the creator, executive producer, and showrunner. Taylor Sheridan executive produces via Bosque Ranch Producitons.

Sutherland has been cast in a recurring character role as Judge Isaac Parker, described as “an imposing and commanding judge in the Fort Smith Courthouse with a complicated legacy.”

The “Ordinary People” star will appear alongside other series regulars including Lauren E. Banks, Forrest Goodluck, Barry Pepper, and Demi Singleton. Dennis Quaid, Joaquina Kalukango, Lonnie Chavis, Rob Morgan, Ryan O’Nan, Grantham Coleman and Justin Hurtt-Dunkley will recur, with Shea Whigham and Garrett Hedlund set to make a guest appearance.

Since launching his acting career decades ago, Sutherland has racked up credits on projects like “MASH,” “The Dirty Dozen,” “Ordinary People,” “1900,” “Klute,” and “Don’t Look Now.” He is also known for playing President Snow in the highly popular “Hunger Games” franchise, which brought in nearly $3 billion worldwide.

His recent TV works include “The Undoing” and “Trust.” In 1995, he won an Emmy for his acclaimed performance in the TV movie, “Citizen X.”
