In the lawsuit which was filed on Monday, August 14, in Shelby County, Tennessee, probate court, Oher alleged that he discovered in February of this year that the Tuohys never really adopted him.

They instead tricked him into signing a document which made them his conservators in 2004 when he turned 18.

Oher claims that the document gave the Tuohys the legal right to make business deals in his name.

He was told that in doing so he would become part of their family but he recently discovered that he was never made part of the family.

Oher also claimed that he never received a dime from the movie which was made from his life story, instead the Tuohy family received $225,000 each for The Blind Side in addition to 2.5 percent of the film’s “defined net proceeds.”

The legal document obtained states, “Since at least August of 2004, Conservators have allowed Michael, specifically, and the public, generally, to believe that Conservators adopted Michael and have used that untruth to gain financial advantages for themselves and the foundations which they own or which they exercise control. All monies made in said manner should in all conscience and equity be disgorged and paid over to the said ward, Michael Oher.”

Michael Oher — Oher Speaks Out After Suing The Tuohy Family

Following the news of his lawsuit against the Tuohy family, Oher released a statement on Tuesday, August 15, asking for privacy for him and his family.

The statement reads, “I am disheartened by the revelation shared in the lawsuit today.”

“This is a difficult situation for my family and me. I want to ask everyone to please respect our privacy at this time. For now, I will let the lawsuit speak for itself and will offer no further comment.”

Meanwhile, Sean told Daily Memphian on August 14 that his family is currently devastated due to the allegations leveled against them by Oher.

He went on to tell the outlet, “It’s upsetting to think we would make money off any of our children. But we’re going to love Michael at 37 just like we loved him at 16.”

Marty Singer a lawyer for the Tuohy family stated on Tuesday, “When Michael Lewis, a friend of Sean’s since childhood, was approached about turning his book on Mr. Oher and the Tuohys into a movie about their family, his agents negotiated a deal where they received a small advance from the production company and a tiny percentage of net profits. They insisted that any money received be divided equally. And they have made good on that pledge.”

Michael Oher Wish To Terminate The Conservatorship?

Singer further stated, “Should Mr. Oher wish to terminate the conservatorship, either now or at anytime in the future, the Tuohys will never oppose it in any way,” while adding, “The Tuohys opened their home to Mr. Oher, offered him structure, support and, most of all, unconditional love.”

Their attorney continued, “They have consistently treated him like a son and one of their three children. His response was to threaten them, including saying that he would plant a negative story about them in the press unless they paid him $15 million.”

He went on to share that the Tuohy family intends to “defend their good names, stand up to this shakedown and defeat this offensive lawsuit.”
