It’s well over a year since the slap heard around the world took place yet, it’s still been talked about in one way or another.
It’s also been seven months since the slap victim Chris Rock made jokes about the mini wrestling on his comedy special “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” but Jada Pinkett Smith chose now to voice out her feelings about it.
In a recent interview with “The Hollywood Reporter” published on Saturday, October 14, the “Girls’ Trip” star spoke up for the first time about how she felt when she heard the jokes Chris made about her and her husband Will Smith.
Jada said, “I remember my heart piercing, my heart cracking, and I remember my feelings being so hurt. And then I remember being able to smile and wish him well at the same time.”
Jada Pinkett Smith — On The Infamous Slap And Chris’ Jokes
For clarity purposes, last year during the Oscars Academy Award, 2022, Chris made a joke about Jada’s shaved head which didn’t sit well with Jada, and although Will found the joke funny at first, after seeing the unamused look on Jada’s face, he went on to make Chris pay. I
t is worthy of note that Jada’s shaved head is as a result of having alopecia, a condition that causes drastic hair loss.
At the Academy Awards, Chris Rock made a joke saying “Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it, all right?” There was great laughter in the audience including Will, after which Chris added, “That was a nice one, OK?” But seconds later, after seeing Jada’s face, Will matched up to Chris to deliver him a sound slap and walked back to his seat screaming “Keep my wife’s name out of your f–king mouth!”
During Chris’ comedy special, the comedian joked, “People asked me if it hurt,” he said during the special. “Yes, that shit hurt! I got hit so hard, I heard ‘Summertime’ ringing in my ears.” He further rubbed it in by saying, “Will Smith practices selective outrage. Outrage because everybody knows what the fuck happened. Everybody that really knows, knows that I have nothing to do with that shit. I didn’t have any entanglements.”
Jada Pinkett Smith — Jada Thought Will’s Action Was A “Skit”
Elsewhere in a different interview, Jada revealed that she and Will have not been living together as husband and wife since 2016 and was shocked when Will used the word “wife” during his altercation with Chris.
In an exclusive interview for “Jada’s Story: An NBC News Special with Hoda Kotb” Jada whose upcoming memoir “Worthy” will be released on October 17, said that when she saw Will match up to Chris and slapped him, she thought it was a well-planned sort of entertainment for the Oscars.
It wasn’t until Chris left the building and she was told “Chris has left the building and he’s not going to press charges,” that she understood it was real.
In another interview with PEOPLE, the 52-year-old said, “I thought, ‘This is a skit,'” she told PEOPLE. “I was like, ‘There’s no way that Will hit him.’ It wasn’t until Will started to walk back to his chair that I even realized it wasn’t a skit.”
Meanwhile, during Chris’ comedy special, he revealed that Jada had previously tried to get him to step down from hosting the Oscars because Will wasn’t nominated for his 2015 film Concussion.
“So I did some jokes about her. Who gives a f—?” Said Chris. “That’s how it is: She starts it, I finish it. That’s what the f— happened. Nobody’s picking on this bitch. She started this s—. Nobody’s picking on her. She said me, a f—ing grown-ass man, should quit his job because he wasn’t nominated for Concussion and then this n—- gives me a f—ng concussion!”
