In 2006 William and Kate were in a committed relationship after dating for a few years. They met at St. Andrew’s University and graduated together.

That year William reportedly invited Kate to join the royal family for their annual Christmas at Sandringham tradition.

Bear in mind there are some royals who don’t score an invite, so this was a VIP matter. Later, Express reported that Kate turned down the invite because William had not put a ring on it.
