Rejoice all Disney lovers, for Moana of Motunui will be gracing our screens again. Maybe not as the series it was initially planned as, but still.
Moana To Return To the Sea In New Adventurous Sequel To the Highly-acclaimed Disney Franchise
We are about to get more Moana than we can handle. On Nov. 27, Moana 2 will hit theaters with a number of original casts returning. Sometime after that, the live action adaptation, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, will follow.
If you’ve been staring at the edge of the water long as you can remember and you don’t really know why, “Moana 2” is presumably going to answer that for you.
“After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced,” Disney shared of the upcoming feature film’s plotline.
“Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise and we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui,” Iger said in a statement on Wednesday.
This means we’ll get to see the seafarer princess push even further than we’ve seen her gone yet.
Dave Derrick Jr. directs the project, with Grammy winners Emily Bear and Abigail Barlow, Mark Mancina, and Grammy nominee Opetaia Foa’i composing the score.
Auli’i Cravalho voiced the main character Moana, while Dwayne Johnson voiced the supporting character – a demigod named Maui. The movie is reported to have made over $680 million at the global box office and has been viewed for over 1 billion hours on Disney+.
Dwayne Johnson Reacts To News He Will Reprise His “Moana” Role in the Live-action Adaptation
While Johnson will be reprising his role as Maui in the live-action adaptation, Disney has opted to recast the role of Moana.
“Deeply humbled to announce we’re bringing the beautiful story of MOANA to the live action big screen!” Johnson wrote in the caption of his Instagram announcement.
“This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace, mana and warrior strength,” he continued. “I wear our culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once in a lifetime opportunity to reunite with MAUI, inspired by the spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, is one that runs very deep for me.”
“We’re honored to partner with @DisneyStudios to tell our story through the realm of music and dance, which at the core is who we are as Polynesian people,” he said, before rounding off with the famous Maui hook, “You’re welcome.”
The live action remake is expected to hit the theaters in June 27, 2025.
