It looks like the Yellowstone story is far from finished. Nearly four months after the production company announced that Season 5—the final season of the critically acclaimed Paramount Network series—was weeks away, reports suggest a sixth season might happen.
Deadline and Puck, who were first to report the news, say Cole Hauser (Rip Wheeler) and Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton) are in talks to headline the new season of the Taylor Sheridan-created series.
Kevin Costner’s – Departure And Potential Season 6
The possible extension comes as the show moves forward without its longtime star, Kevin Costner.
News broke in June that Costner, who had played John Dutton, would not return for the remainder of season 5 after rumors of his departure swirled. When contacted by PEOPLE, a Paramount representative declined to comment.
Yellowstone began as a cable series in 2018 on the Paramount Network, and it is now also streamable on Peacock.
At its core, it focuses on the Dutton family, who have been the stewards of the largest ranch in the US for six generations, and their struggles to protect it from external enemies and internal adversaries alike.
The saga is set within the context of the modern-day American West – but the show is as much about the family’s complex personal lives as it is about ranching.
Expanding The Yellowstone Universe With Spinoffs
A sixth-season rumor appeared only one day after Paramount confirmed Yellowstone’s latest spinoff series, The Madison.
The spinoff starred Matthew Fox and Michelle Pfeiffer and told the story of a family from New York now living in the Madison River Valley of Montana, described by the network as a “heartfelt study of grief and human connection.”
This marks Yellowstone’s seventh spinoff since its debut, which also starred Kevin Costner.
The Yellowstone universe now stretches far beyond its original show. The first spinoff, 1883, features James and Margaret Dutton (played by Faith Hill and Tim McGraw), the pious Scottish grandparents of the current patriarch of Yellowstone, John Dutton (Kevin Costner), as they travel from Texas to Montana via the Great Plains.
There is another co-prequel, Lawmen: Bass Reeves, a limited series that crosses with 1883. David Oyelowo stars as the titular lawman and the series premiered on Paramount+ last fall.
Most recently, the next series in the Taylor Sheridan prequel empire, 1923, follows the lead characters of 1883, James and Margaret Dutton (Tim McGraw and Faith Hill), as their son Jacob (Harrison Ford) and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren) travel west to Montana.
Premiering in 2022, and 1923 has already been renewed for season two, with Mirren and Ford confirmed to return.
And there are other spin-offs in the works, such as 6666 (pronounced “Four Sixes”) – a series starring Matthew McConaughey that centers the events of his character’s life – and 1944, a prequel to 1883 that, not surprisingly, is set in 1944 which focuses on the Dutton family’s history during that year.
Paramount announced in April 2023 that they will be moving forward with 6666, while details on 1944 are scant.
Viewers can stream past seasons of Lawmen: Bass Reeves, 1883 and 1923 on Paramount+, while Yellowstone is on Peacock.
Kevin Costner’s – Exit And What’s Next for Yellowstone
The TV series’ original lead, the three-time Academy Award-winner Kevin Costner, will not appear in the second half of Season 5 (or if there is a sixth season).
Costner left Yellowstone to prepare and appear in the movie Horizon: An American Saga, a western that opened in October to poor box-office reviews. Shooting the split second half of Season 5 exacerbated continuing tensions that made Costner’s return impossible.
Producers recently completed shooting Season 5B after delays caused by writers’ and actors’ strikes in Hollywood. The first part of Season 5 ended in January 2023, with fans eagerly awaiting the next set of episodes. Paramount announced that Season 5B will premiere on 10 November.
