General Hospital’s fans were stunned to learn that Kelly Monaco, who has played Sam McCall for the past 21 years had been fired from the show.
It seems that Sam will be killed off in a storyline dictated move. Steve Burton, who has played Sam’s long time interest for years has spoken out on the matter. What does he have to say about his long time partner’s exit?
General Hospital Spoilers – Changes Have Been Happening At GH All Year
A lot of things have changed both onscreen and off this year both behind the scenes and onscreen. It started with a writers shake up when Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor were fined as head writers of the show. These two were replaced by Elizabeth Korte and Patrick Mulcahey. Mulcahey had been a long time soap writer but was fired within a few months.
In August, Chris Van Etten was rehired and he along with Elizabeth Korte became the head writers. A lot of casting changes have happened this year as well.
Steve Burton returned after a three year absence. Of course, fans remember Steve being fired for refusing to take a mandatory COVID shot when his exemptions were turned down by executives.
Jonathan Jackson is back as Lucky Spencer as well. Of course, fans know that Lucky has been the fly by night and drop in for an occasional visit for years.
Lucky was last seen when Anthony Geary retired in 2015. Lucky brought Jake Spencer (Hudson West) home after finding him on Cassadine Island. This was part of Luke’s redemption story.
GH Spoilers – Stars Who Have Left This Year
Fans are thrilled to have Jason and Lucky back, however, Roger Howarth (Austin Holt) left early this year when his character was killed off. Michael Easton (Hamilton Finn) also departed when his character was shipped off to rehab after he fell off the wagon when his father died. Michael E. Knight (Martin Gray) has been absent most of the year as well.
Of course, some of these stars were popular among fans even though their characters may have been a bit shady. However, that doesn’t mean that fans don’t miss them.
Some fans have been wishing for them to return as former GH character or even characters they have played on another show. Nicholas Chavez also exited for a movie role.
General Hospital Spoilers – Fans Were Blindsided When Kelly Monaco Was Fired
None of that changes that have happened this year could have prepared fans for the termination of a 21 year vet from the show. Sam and Jason have been a part of each others lives since she arrived in Port Charles. Many time the scene has replayed of their first meeting at the PCPD all of those years ago.
ABC ran their 60th Anniversary prime time special, it was Kelly who helped Laura Wright with the announcement of Steve’s return to the show. Jasam fans were thrilled hoping that FINALLY Sam and Jason would be back together.
After all, they had been cheated when Steve returned before. Now it seems that hope could be lost for any kind of reunion now that Kelly has been fired.
GH Spoilers – Steve Burton Addresses Kelly Monaco’s Firing
Steve and Bradford Anderson (Damian Spinelli) filmed their Daily Drama pod cast shortly after Kelly’s firing, which was announced during a week they were off work.
Bradford addressed the huge amount of questions posted by fans on their podcast webpage. This including informing fans that they found out the same time as the general public.
Bradford also addressed that fact that the don’t have any information on what happened. Steve told fans, “I wish we had information to tell you.” Steve did say that he expects more would be released in the coming days about the whole situation. Steve could not confirm how Sam it to be written off but did offer this. “Whatever happens sucks.”
Will Steve speak more on the subject? will Kelly make an appearance on the podcast in the future? Perhaps Kelly will even open up on Maurice Benard’s State Of Mind. Whatever the case, fans are rallying in an attempt to keep Sam and Kelly on the show. Will fans efforts work?

Amen. Watched since the beginning of the show. Bring back who you selfishly fired you sad good for nothing show. The ones you fired we ,loved on here. I stopped watching the minute your so called writers put Drew and Willow together. Have you no common sense on who the fans like to see on here.? That story is sickening. First of all killing Sam off the show makes no sense!Why?! The writers on GH sould be fired! They killed Dr Austin Holt( played by the brilliant Roger Howarth) and never explained who killed him! Why wake up LuLu at all if you are not gonna have the triangle of Sam/ Dante/ LuLu! That’s the drama we live for.Having Sam as the liver doner makes no sense they are not related and besides you don’t have to die to donate your liver! All this is ridiculous! Having Lucky(Jonathan Jackson) back is nice but if I have to choose between him and Sam ,keep Lucky off canvas!If GH wants to get rid of Characters let’s go down the list of those that need the boot! It would have been smarter to give Sam McCall (who is loved by just about everyone) a great storyline. Writers…so many of the storylines you have on the canvas right now suck! What to hell are you thinking? If you get rid of Kelly, I quit!

Killing off, Sam makes a lot of sense. Her part has been nonexistent lately. Why do you ever think about it her own personal failings? You need to remember these actors and actresses all belong to a union and if she was fired for no reason or just for a storyline. The union would fight it. The only way she can actually get fired is for cause all of these people have a contract as well. She’s in the middle of her contract so that only means that she got fired for cause what would cost me maybe coming to work drugged up every day because that’s what she looks like, all she does is roll her eyes or look to heaven to try to remember her lines and people are saying the writings been crap and that’s the reason well know any good actor or actress can make any type of written material look fantastic Steve Burton does it Maurice Benard does it, even Laura Wright, who I am not a fan of does it. She was fired for cause there is no doubt about that. They knew they’d get this flak . They knew they’d get blowback yet . They still did it.. eventually, it will come up by the way Michael Easton left on his own. He wasn’t fired. Roger Horvath left on his own. He wasn’t fired Michael E Knight was a recurring character in that on contract the same with James Patrick Stuart recurring character not on contract, as well as Wally Kurth and Jon Lindstrom, both of them have many outside interests in our on many other TV series, daytime, and prime so make no mistake. She was fired for a reason it eventually come out.

Drew is a sleaze, Willow is weak and dumb, Sam is going to die for some reason, Sonny kills Cates out in the open when he could have outsourced that, Kristina has a gun to do what with, Ava runs over the Dr that Lucky saved, Laura is off to war torn East Africa and turned down Tracy’s offer to supply PROFESSIONAL Mercenaries!! Please stop this madness. I’ve been watching since 1960 when my Godmother picked me up from 1/2 day kindergarten. Please don’t run me away now!

Well, that’s interesting that you watched since 1960 considering it wasn’t on until 1963 and you were a child so that’s probably why you don’t really know the year but I did watch since 1963 as I was 12 years old then. I’ve seen many people on all sorts of social media claiming that characters like lucky and Lulu even Jager we’re considered new. It shouldn’t be on and they should be gone first before someone like Sam.. well as far as characters go lucky and Lulu we’re on since 1993 and 1996 was on since 1992. Yeah she showed up 2003 so yeah, she should go.
To be fair, Willow has always been weak and dumb. When she got cancer and pregnant with Amelia, she postponed chemo for the baby’s sake. That’s fair. But once that danger was past, she refused to let Michael look for a bone marrow donor donor because if people knew she was sick, they’d look at her differently which might upset Wiley – as if her dying from lack of transplant would upset the kid. And Michael was just like “whatever you want, dear. You’re so brave.” Of course she later changed her mind which set up the Willow/Drew storyline that everyone finds incomprehensibly icky. So dumb and weak is nothing new.
Correction: I meant to say “as if her dying wouldn’t upset the kid.” Point being Wiley would be more upset by his mother’s death than by people looking at her anxiously.
Killing Sam makes absolutely no sense. She has been a staple on this show way too long. I can’t see watching if she is not on it. Count me as a lost fan.
Ive never bonded with the Sam character. I will be glad to see it written out instead of recast. I don’t care for her current stand ins. Looking forward to a new storyline and characters. Progress to save the show.

Jonathan Jackson is not back for good. It’s a temp storyline. He has a new show coming out at some point in Sept I think. Don’t remember what the name is. I’m done if they fire Kelly Monaco. I’m not going to watch them kill off her character. My guess is Carly and Jason will be back together at some point which is so stupid. I am really done with this show. I’m tired of the whole Sonny crap that just goes on and on. Each storyline gets more boring than the last. Carly’’s Storylines are just as bad. I could live without either of them on the show.
Love Sonny and Carly, Kristina is my favorite of all the Davis girls. It used to be molly but not since she so cruelly went after her sister.i hate that Sam is getting killed off. I am so glad that cates is dead. Carly and Jason will not revisit that dumb marriage idea.
It’s not Jonathon Jackson that has a new show coming in September, it’s Joshua Jackson and it’s Doctor Odyssey. Jonathon doesn’t have any other projects other than GH at present, I’ve checked all over.
Huge mistake, GH! I read that Kelly wouldn’t take a pay cut like others did – I’m assuming it’s to help cover the cost of bringing back Lucky. Yes, it would be cool to have Lucky back, but if they can’t afford his salary in the first place, why pursue it any further? Big names are important in entertainment (ratings, fans, blah blah blah), but big names become big names once they’ve established themselves and have a solid fan base. So we watch these actors grow and they work their way into our hearts, and we learn to admire and love them. And nothing against the actors portraying them, but why is it so freakin important to bring on/back Jagger, Brennan, Ric Lansing, Heather, etc? Couldn’t they save some money by not bringing them on in the first place? Nope. Let’s just get rid of a popular, respected, long-time character to pay for Lucky. (And in lesser amounts, the aforementioned characters.) We’ve watched Sam’s character grow and mature and touch our hearts. She has ties to family in Port Charles, and has turned her life around, and has become a pivotal and respected character. So, what’s the best and most intelligent way to use Kelly’s character? Build her up and kill her off! Then bring on Lucky! Hmmmm, I wonder who else they’ll fire to maybe bring back Luke. Probably some long-term character who’s been in Port Charles for a while – maybe someone like Maxie. Or Sonny. Or a Quartermane or two. But by all means, keep Natalia, who no longer has ties or family in PC. THAT would be the GH way. Oh, and if nothing else, please dump Kristina – I’m so sick of her whining and double-crossing, all the while having Alexis stick up for her. I hate the thought of anyone (even a fictional character) killing themselves, but if Kristina did follow through with her plan, then let her be a match for Lulu and donate her liver. That would at least give her character a chance to redeem herself, even posthumously. Sam is the wrong person to kill off. Besides, Kelly can act circles around Kristina’s portrayer any day. But GH won’t listen to the fans that keep it on the air, and they’ll just keep snipping away until they’ve lost all their supporters. Then they’ll wonder why they could get canceled.

Honestly, I believe the network would like to cancel GH but don’t want it to be their doing. So they are purposely writing horrible storylines so the can say GH was cancelled duele to low viewership.

Maybe they should sit down and watch the 20 minutes of show because aside from losing some of the best characters and giving us terrible substitutes and then a total of 10 commercials every time there is a break, GH is really loosing it. Finally someone else will get a chance for screen time. While Kelly is a good actress, the writing for four or five characters while the other actors stay on the sideline. There needs to be a more balanced show. I am biased because I am a Jason/Liz fan.

I agree GH is my absolute favorite. Been watching it with my mom since Luke and Laura’s wedding I think I was like two lol. This show is more than just a show its memories of those who we shared it with. Its familiar characters etc. This writers are ruining this show. Why? Just listen to the fans and bring back old writers. Killing Sam is a huge mistake. So sad GH has come to this.

Why would you kill Kelly Monaco off. She’s been on the soap forever and is one of the best there is. She always creates a good storyline. There are just some people you don’t kill off. Sorry, Jonathon Jackson has a 3 or 4 year contract with GH. As far as the new series, they may have taped 8 to 10 episodes already, and ABC could have cancelled the show before it began, a la WILL TRENT (although I hope they haven’t cancelled it!).
I feel that getting rid of Sam(Kelly Monaco) is one of the biggest mistakes that GH will ever make.. I will definitely stop watching the show until they change writers. Totally ridiculous!
Get rid of Nina, Drew ( disgusting storyline),Wimpy Willow, Heather ( enough is enough), Natalia, Kristina, Molly, T. J. and his mama. I agree with the majority that these writers are taking storylines in the wrong direction. Big mistake writing Sam out. Also the Drew , Willow match up is disgusting in my opinion. Not sad to see Cates gone. Losing interest in the soap which has always been a favorite.

I don’t like or dislike Sam, but how is this any different from when Emme Rylan was suddenly let go. Or the guy that played julian. They had big fan bases that loved their characters too. Characters get fired all the time. I wish the Character of Alexis would Go.
I’m looking forward to Lulu coming back. I always loved her and Dante together and I’m hoping they some how find a way to make Charlotte really Dante biological daughter with Lulu so that Valentin can become a dark Villain with nothing holding him back.

Kelly Monaco as Sam has been good but I won’t be distraught to see her go.
I happen to enjoy the drama of Drew & Willow (Cameron Mathison who plays Drew is 54 and Katelyn MacMullen who plays Willow is 29 or 30 so I think people are seriously overreacting about them being like father and daughter ).
I look forward to seeing what the new writing team has in store for the future!
Keep kelly as Sam write a better storyline for her. Her character is adventurous. Get rid of Trina or her mother. Trina mother is so boring.

I’m ready to turn GH off. Tired of the story lines some are repeats, repeats. Like Sunny and Carly. How many times has Sunny left Carly for another woman and then Carly takes him back. Why can’t you just put Carly and Jason together they belong together chemistry is wonderful. Drew & Willow, are you kidding me. Yuk! They do do not belong together. Turn that story off! Now Sam. What! You fired Sam. We know where this is going. San dies and she gives Lulu her liver. Wow that was hard to figure out. Come on you need new writers or something better.
I have not watched General Hospital since they announced that Kelly Monica was leaving. There is not one storyline that holds any interest anymore. In the past I would say eight months storyline of Sonny losing his mind was just plain stupidity and Willow was disgusting. And that was fast-forward TJ Molly all they do is fight no acting there could not stand John Cates another stupid line we’re stuck FBI agent could get away with the things he did no sorry General Hospital used to have some substance and some reality and a lot of interest. It’s over after 40 years. I have to say I’m done.
I’ve always stick up for the writers when people complain. I’m sure uts a tough job because there is no way to please everyone. Unfortunately since all the changes occurrd in the writing staff they are hardly making anyone happy! The cast changes are bad enough but they totally changed some of the characters. They made Drew a total creep, I was looking forward to him and Jason being on at the same time because I figured they would finally get the chance to get to know each other. It was set up perfectly for that with him dating Carly. None of the people that should have knew Sonny’s meds were off even though he was acting like he does when he’s off them and Ava, who switched Morgan’s meds, was living with him. Carly, Michale, Kristina and Dante, also Jason when he got back, should have seen it and Kristina for sure could have gotten hom to the hospital. It was so out of character for all of them to blow that off. The fight between Carky and Sam when Sam found out why Jason had stayed gone was ridiculous!! Carly doesn’t just fold up into herself when she fighting, she’s fierce and makes sure she is heard and Sam’s not unreasonable or an idiot! She knew why Carly did what she did, she’s done worse. The writers need to realize we have been here, not them, they can’t just change the characters we have known for yrs to different people!! It’s time to listen to the fans writers! Do not let Kelly go!! Also, whoever bright idea it was to screw up Willow and Drew needs to fix it!! Don’t care how, we’ve over looked some pretty crazy stuff so whatever ya gotta do, Dallas style dream for all I care, JUST FIX IT!!!!

I thought when we started having problems with cable GH would be what I missed most. Wrong. It has become more and more ridiculous. I won’t start watching again when I get my ABC affiliate back. I’ve been watching this show since I wad 12 and now I’m 76. You have lost a committed viewer. . We need to band together and stop supporting the advertisers. That’s where it gets noticed.
I am so sick of the simpering middle child, baby of the family rivalry of the Davis girls story line. Molly is an attorney and they’ve got her whining like Jan Brady. Soap opera angst is on thing, whining adults acting like junior high siblings is something I don’t need to watch as entertainment.
