‘When Calls the Heart’ Season 12 Taps Melissa Gilbert To Guest Star

You heard me, ‘Little House on the Prairie’ veteran Melissa Gilbert will be appearing on the upcoming season of ‘When Calls the Heart’ in a 2-episode arc.  Here’s everything we know about the special guest appearance.

Hallmark Channel Shares Details of Melissa Gilbert’s Character On ‘When Calls the Heart’

On Saturday, Hallmark Channel shared the agreeable news with fans, announcing that Gilbert, 60, will guest star in two episodes of the upcoming season.

Her character, Georgie McGill is said to “share a surprising past with one special Hope Valley resident.” How did this surprising development come about?

Well, ‘When Calls the Heart’s’ executive producer is Michael Landon Jr., whose father, Michael Landon, played the beloved character Pa (Charles Ingalls) on the family series, ‘Little House on the Prairie,’ which aired from 1974 to 1983.

Gilbert, who also appeared on the show as Laura Ingalls Wilder, reunited with Landon Jr., 60, in March at the Little House on the Prairie 50th Anniversary Cast Reunion and Festival. This reunion happily gave birth to the idea of Gilbert guest starring on the cherished Hallmark show.

Hallmark Media Vice President of Programming, Kelly Garrett, further touched on the similarities between the two shows in a recent statement that read: “When Calls the Heart has long drawn comparisons to Little House on the Prairie, for its charming and compelling stories of hope, human connection and frontier survival.”

Garrett continued, “It was only fitting that the first people to hear this special news were the Hearties – devoted fans who have celebrated the show year after year and made it such a success. The energy being here with them to share this news is electric and we cannot wait for them to meet Georgie next year.”

In May, the show was renewed for a 12 episode season 12, which will continue to thrill fans “with its themes about family, community, and of course romance as we move further into the 1920s.”
