Lyle And Erik Menéndez Want To Shed More Light On So Much of Their Story That’s Still Untold

Lyle and Erik Menéndez are working on a new project that will give the public an insight into what drove them to kill their parents. At the time of their sentencing, the consensus had been that they did it out of greed, but after so many documentaries about their story, they’ve even managed to tap into a fanbase that’s now campaigning for their freedom. The brothers have spent nearly three decades in prison, being locked up in separate facilities for the first twenty-two.

New Netflix Documentary To Explore Lyle And Erik Menéndez’s Untold Story

This is coming after Erik lashed out at Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series ‘Monsters’ for wrongly depicting their story and trying to make it out that boys can’t be raped.

So probably to correct some of the alleged “lies and ruinous character portrayals” in ‘Monsters,’ they have decided to come forward with their story. According to reports, the brothers were interviewed in 15-minute increments at Donovan Correctional Facility in California.

“Everyone asks why we killed our parents,” Lyle says in an audio interview from prison for the documentary ‘The Menendez Brothers.’ “Maybe now people can understand the truth.”

“What happened that night is very well known but so much hasn’t been told,” Erik says in a clip shared with PEOPLE magazine.

Erik Menéndez Claims They Didn’t Kill Their Parents “For Money” In Upcoming Documentary

Lyle and Erik became infamous in the 1990s after they were convicted of killing their parents aged 21 and 18 respectively.

They committed the crime at their family home in Beverly Hills, Calif., and shot them multiple times with 12-gauge shotguns. When police arrived at the scene, both brothers were still at the house, which was convenient for them as they claimed to have only gotten back from the movies.

However, Erik let slip to a therapist that the murders were committed by him and his older brother Lyle. The therapist in turn told his girlfriend, who told the cops after their relationship soured.

At the time of their hearing, both brothers insisted they did the crimes after growing up in the hands of a sexually abusive father and an enabling mother. Three years after their first trial ended in a deadlock, the brothers were sentenced to life in prison with no parole.

There have been attempts to overturn this, with the brothers “cautiously optimistic” they will get to walk as free men once more.

“There was a media spectacle from the beginning,” says Lyle in the documentary.

“So, we were not the ones who told the story about our lives,” adds Erik. “Two kids don’t commit this crime for money.”

‘The Menendez Brothers’ airs on Netflix on Oct. 7.
