Mariska Hargitay Shares Haunting Law & Order SVU Confession

Mariska Hargitay is a primetime legend and often dubbed the Law & Order Queen on NBC.  After over two decades on Law & Order Special Victims Unit as Detective Olivia Benson, the actress shared the darker side of her dream TV job.  Solving twisted sex crimes for twenty plus years on TV has had some adverse affects on Hargitay.  Keep reading for all the details.  

Law & Order SVU  – Mariska Hargitay Confesses

If you have watched Law & Order SVU over the years, then you have seen some of the most heinous crimes from American History and current events reenacted on television.  It’s one thing to catch a season here or there, but imagine acting out those crimes since 1999? 

Mariska Hargitay is one of the strongest primetime actresses on air right now, and even she admits to struggling filming some of the stories on Special Victims Unit.  

While chatting with Interview Magazine, the Law & Order actress explained, “There’s been times when I didn’t know how to protect myself, and I think I was definitely a victim of secondary trauma from being inundated with these stories and knowing that they were true,” she continued. “Those were the parts that I didn’t know how to metabolize, just because of the sheer volume of it. That’s also why I started Joyful Heart Foundation, so I would feel like, well, at least I’m doing something about it.”

Interestingly, the Olivia Benson portrayer isn’t the first Law & Order actor to use their TV knowledge and apply it in real life to help victims of sex crimes.

Law & Order  – Actress Gets Real About SVU

Hargitay also pointed out the positive side of SVU airing heinous sex crimes over the decades. 

Despite the show’s dark reality, it has helped a lot of women that are attacked navigate the process and know what to expect when they go to the hospital and deal with police officers.  

Right now Law & Order fans are excitedly awaiting the Special Victims Unit Fall Premiere on NBC, which is scheduled for October 3rd.
