Amber Tamblyn Reveals The Age She Had Plastic Surgery, And It’s Shocking

Amber Tamblyn Reveals The Age She Had Plastic Surgery, And It's ShockingIn a recent editorial for The New York Times, Amber Tamblyn talked about her experience having plastic surgery when she was a young girl.

After getting her first major television job at the age of 12, the 41-year-old ‘Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’ star disclosed that she had ear-pinning surgery.

Why Amber Tamblyn Had A Surgery At Age 12

According to Tamblyn’s article, she felt self-conscious about her ears, saying they “stuck out like butterfly wings.” She was made fun of by her classmates as a result, and she frequently wished her ears would rest flat on her head. She didn’t decide to have the surgery until she was getting ready for her TV debut.

“Once I knew millions of people all over the world would be judging me on their television screens, not just on a playground, that knowledge changed everything for me,” she expressed.

While she didn’t specify which television role influenced her decision, Tamblyn began her acting career on General Hospital in 1995, the year she turned 12.

How Amber Tamblyn Felt About The Surgery

Tamblyn reflected on the surgery, describing it as a “hypocritical” choice given her identity as a passionate young feminist who had previously written about women going to great lengths to appear “young and desirable.” She articulated that the surgery felt like a “weapon” she could use in self-defense against societal pressures regarding beauty.

Her essay also connected to the film ‘The Substance’, featuring Demi Moore, which addresses the harsh realities of aging in Hollywood. In the movie, Moore’s character, the host of a fitness show, is replaced on her 50th birthday by a younger actress, leading her to resort to a black-market drug that promises youth but has horrific side effects.

In a conversation with USA TODAY, Moore highlighted that the film resonates with many, as it delves into the self-judgment and criticism that can result in “almost a violence against ourselves.” She expressed hope that the film might contribute to a cultural shift in how society views aging.

Facing “Beauty Standards” in The Movie Industry

Tamblyn, reflecting on her own experiences as a child actress in a hyper-sexualized industry, recalled a director advising her that the “key to a long-lasting career was to stay as young as possible for as long as possible.” She also recalled overhearing an agent remark that representing actresses over 30 was “hell on earth.”

“This kind of warped thinking has become the status quo — and women can become our own worst adversaries,” she noted. She pondered whether she would have been happier had she resisted the urge to change her appearance, admitting she frequently reflects on her willingness to conform to industry standards.

Other celebrities, like Bella Hadid, have also opened up about their regrets regarding plastic surgery. Hadid disclosed in a 2022 Vogue interview that she underwent a nose job at 14, expressing a desire to have kept her ancestral nose, believing she would have grown into it.
