The Dutton family is finding new ways to cope after the death of patriarch John Dutton. Following the premiere of Season 5B, Hollywood Reporter caught up with two of the show’s major players – Luke Grimes (Kayce Dutton) and Kelsey Asbille (Monica Dutton) – to discuss what fans can expect from the epic saga as it winds down to the end.
First of all, there’s already a lot of tangling that fans are hoping will be carefully disentangled by the time the show’s remaining episodes air.
Yellowstone Spoilers – Luke Grimes Updates Fans On His Character’s Relationship With the Family Following Costner’s Passing
John Dutton is dead, and the question now is do the Duttons get vengeance and save the ranch or are there too many snakes within the pack for their bite to make any sense.
Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) and Sarah Atwood (Dawn Olivieri) apparently have a lot to answer to when it comes to the murder of John, but if Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) can’t recruit Kayce Dutton to join her cause, will she be strong enough to weather Jamie and Sarah?
However, Kayce has a decision of his own to make; does he come back into the family fold and live on the ranch – as John offered before his death – or does he keep maintaining his distance.
Speaking on this, Grimes tells THR, “We kind of pick up right where we left off. The last conversation they had, Monica was asking about the [house] in the east camp [of the Yellowstone ranch] and [when the show returns] you find them there, checking this place out.
They’re asking, could this be our home? [Kelsey and I] were talking about it how it was so fun to film those scenes [also with son Tate, played by Brecken Merrill], because finally there’s some levity. There’s some joy. You find them in a good spot. And then of course, that doesn’t last very long.”
For Kelsey Asbille, peace for her character and her character’s husband is one of her greatest hopes.
“Oh, [there are] definitely [hurdles]. That’s I guess part of marriage, the hurdles. That’s just life! But I think they’ve always been endgame for each other. It’s what they’ve been working so hard towards, building this family and making a home with their son and looking forward. So I hope they get that peace in the end.”
Yellowstone Spoilers – Luke Grimes Reveals the Ultimate Decision His “Soldier” Character Will Be Forced To Make
For this season of ‘Yellowstone,’ the show’s director Christina Voros described Kayce as a “soldier.”
Weighing in on why that is, Grimes says, “Family always, right? But, which one? That’s always the thing. That’s Kayce’s whole dilemma. Is it this family [with Monica], or is it this family [with Beth]? This season, he really has to make a choice and he’s got Set featured imageto figure out a way to do what’s right.”
“He’s always going to choose this family [with Monica] first, but he’s got to use his head this season a little bit to figure out what’s right for everyone. How do I make the biggest difference? And it’s really cool to see Kayce that way, because he’s been so indecisive and he’s never really known what the right thing is to do,” he continues, adding, “So, to see him take charge a little bit and to have a direction in his life is really nice.”
