Grammys Snub K-pop Artists Again And Fans Are Not Happy

K-pop may have dominated Billboard’s global charts for much of the year – Rosé and Bruno Mars’ ‘APT.‘ is literally on top of the Billboard Global Songs Chart right now – but they didn’t even manage to make a dent on this year’s Grammy nominations list.

The Grammy Awards nominations list shocked many when it was released on Nov. 8. For the second consecutive year, no K-pop act was recognized in any of the categories.

Should the 2024 Grammys Make A Separate Category For K-pop?

Even though BTS received nominations at the prestigious awards show for three years in a row, from 2021 to 2023, it didn’t exactly pave the way for other K-pop acts to shine.

The Grammy Awards, which will be hosted on Feb. 2 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, released a list of nominees across 94 categories, covering genres from pop to classical.

Beyoncé led the pack with 11 nominations, including three general field categories: Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year.

Coming in at seven nominations each are Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and Post Malone, with Chapelle Roan, Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Swift receiving six.

Eilish then further earned recognition for being the first artist to have her first three albums receive an Album of the Year nomination. The Beatles also received a nomination for Record of the Year with “Now and Then,” which marks their return to the Grammys after 28 years.

K-pop acts have done a lot this year in terms of sending songs to the top of the charts and filling stadiums with thousands of enthusiastic fans.

Three of BLACKPINK’S members Lisa, Jennie and Rosé and BTS members RM, J-Hope and Jimin released solo music this year, shattering records worldwide, and yet the Grammy failed to recognize the massive influence of these global stars.

Publications like Billboard and USA Today called out the Grammys for what they saw as the “snub list.” The outlets suggested that Grammy could create a category for K-pop, just like they did for Afrobeats when they added Best African Music Performance as an awarded category.

The Recording Academy CEO later addressed the need for more representation, saying, “We see room for improvement across many genres.”
