Sean Ono Lennon Focuses on Innovation, Not Repetition, with His Father’s Work

Editorial credit: Christian Bertrand / Shutterstock.com Sean Ono Lennon, the son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, has embarked on a remarkable journey of preserving and redefining his late father’s legacy. At 49, he has not only delved into the stewardship of John Lennon’s works but has also made a name for himself as a creative force.

This year, Sean earned an Academy Award for a short film inspired by the 1971 classic “Happy Christmas (War Is Over)” and received his first Grammy nomination for producing the deluxe box set of Mind Games (1973).

“It feels overwhelming and surreal,” Sean shared, reflecting on these milestones. His recent accolades include a Webby Award alongside his mother for her interactive art project, “Wish Tree.”

A Connection Through Creativity

Losing his father at the age of five, Sean views his work as more than preservation—it’s a personal bridge to understanding John Lennon.

On the Mind Games project, Sean reimagined his father’s recordings, creating something entirely new while honoring the original spirit. Inspired partly by Dhani Harrison’s work on his father George Harrison’s albums, Sean’s approach has pushed the boundaries of traditional reissues.

The Mind Games box set is itself a work of art, echoing Yoko Ono’s artistic ethos. In addition to remixed tracks, it includes hidden music, videos, puzzles, and ultraviolet-light-revealed messages. While the premium edition retails for $1,350, more accessible versions are available for fans.

Understanding A Global Icon

Growing up, Sean knew his father as a musician but only later grasped the extent of his influence. On their shared birthday, he recalls hearing fans sing John Lennon’s songs outside their New York apartment. “It was pretty clear to me that wasn’t happening with my friends,” he said.

Immersed in his father’s music at home, Sean’s journey as a musician began by learning those iconic songs. Despite the pressure of his lineage, Sean cherishes his role in keeping his father’s music alive, especially after Yoko Ono’s retirement at 91.

In the liner notes for Mind Games, he writes, “the only meaningful way that I can show my love to him.” This labor of love is his way of expressing reverence for his father and mother, whom he also cares for diligently.

Reimagining Mind Games

Initially overlooked, Mind Games faced criticism for its production and lack of promotion. Even John Lennon once described it as a transitional album. Motivated to challenge these perceptions, Sean revamped the album with new mixes that highlight its depth and emotional resonance.

Tracks like “Aisumasen (I’m Sorry)” reveal the warmth and vulnerability reminiscent of John Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band era.

Sean’s bold reimagining extended to exploring alternate takes and unheard fragments like “Make Love, Not War.” While some purists view his approach as taking liberties, Sean defends his artistic choices. “If I’m going to do the best job I can, the only way I can do that is to follow my heart,” he explained. For those seeking the originals, they remain widely accessible.

The Human Side Of A Legend

Sean finds inspiration in his father’s humanity, evident in moments of vulnerability like John’s reflections on his song “Intuition” or the candid footage from the Get Back documentary. These glimpses remind Sean that even legends grapple with imperfection.

Beyond managing his father’s legacy, Sean has pursued his own musical path. This year, he released his album, Asterisms, showcasing his evolution as an artist. Once hesitant to embrace his vocal similarities to John Lennon, Sean now fully embraces his voice. “Now I’m too old to care,” he admitted.

For Sean Ono Lennon, preserving his father’s legacy is both a mission and a deeply personal endeavor. Through meticulous craftsmanship and bold creativity, he continues to honor John Lennon’s impact while forging his own identity as an artist and storyteller.
