In tonight’s WCTH episode, Elizabeth advised the boys to go to the mounties with what they just told her. Cooper and Toby started a small campfire. They believed they put it out like they were supposed to, but they could be wrong. They might be responsible for the fire that destroyed Benson Hills.
The boys had no choice in the matter. They had to got he mounties. They needed to tell their side. They didn’t start a fire maliciously. It still might not be them. McGinty remains a suspect. The boys still did as they promised. They informed their parents who then brought them to the authorities.
Bill and Nathan were honest with them. They said they might ended up spending community service if found responsible. Only they weren’t facing prison time. They were in danger of something far worse. They might be considered liable for the fire and so its best for them to find a lawyer.
The fire destroyed half a town. It destroyed homes, the church, and the school. Cooper and Toby’s parents would never be able to pay that off. They have to start making money now while they could. Minnie has been making jars of jam.
She sells it at the grocery store. She increased how many jars she made after she heard her family could be considered liable. Florence saw that something was off with her and she asked about it. She counts Minnie as a friend. They’ve always gotten along.
It’s just that Minnie couldn’t confide her in about this. She lied to Florence. She told her everything was fine. She was still holding onto the hope that someone else started the fire. The hope might as well die now that the mounties have cleared McGinty.
McGinty did enter the park that day. He went to go bury his cat, Mr. Mittens. He buried her in a cannister so that she would be safe from prey and Nathan did investigate. The story pans out. He buried the cat then drank his sorrows. The bartender remembered him raving on about Mr. Mittens.
McGinty was in the clear. Thus the only suspects they have are the two boys. It came out in the fire report. Rosemary told Lee about it. She also refused to report it in the Hope Valley paper though she warned him that the Benson Hills Beetle might print it themselves.
Rosemary wasn’t wrong because that’s exactly what happened. The paper reported it. The citizens of Benson Hills got antsy. There was a town hall meeting and those people demanded answers. They were angry. They wanted someone to blame.
They first pointed fingers at MacGinty until they were told he had an alibi. They then brought up the kids hiking in the park. They heard that one of the kids was Allie so they didn’t put much faith in Nathan investigating the matter. It was Elizabeth who calmed everyone down.
Elizabeth reminded him that the investigation was still ongoing. If it turns out two kids from Hope Valley were responsible, it needed to be remembered that they thought they did everything right. They put out the fire. They buried it as they were taught to.
They were worried they might’ve missed a step, but might was not a conviction. Cooper overheard his parents talking about how expensive a lawyer was going to be. It made him feel guilty. Like they might have to take his older sister out of school because of him.
Cooper tried to run away from home. His mother stopped him. He forgot she wakes up early. Minnie loves her son. She doesn’t care if he was responsible or not.
He was still her son. She told him how he brought such joy into their lives and that they wouldn’t trade him for anything. She talked her son into staying.
His dad also spoke to Lee. Lee was considering expanding his business from mere lumber to also construction that way Benson Hills has a one stop shop to rebuild. Then he heard about the Hope Valley kids. It made him feel guilty.
It was Lee that first said it was arson. He kept pushing and pushing. He now feels regrets for what he did. He never planned for two children to get caught up in this mess. He was even sorry towards McGinty. The man lost his ranch and he doesn’t have insurance.
He was ruined on top of having buried his one true friend. He was down on his luck when Joseph convinced Lee to show some mercy. Joseph didn’t hold Lee’s push for the arson claim against him. Lee couldn’t let past hurts blind him to McGinty’s losses.
The one thing that could bring the whole community together was a surprise birthday party. Allie threw it for Oliver. He was turning eighteen and was finally getting his own official Mountie horse. Oliver later loved the party. Allie did a great job on such a short notice.
It merely needed two more people. Neither Toby nor Cooper were initially going to go because they didn’t want to ruin the atmosphere. It took Oliver finding them and dragging them to the party to get them to go. There was some awkwardness at first. It was Mayor Hickam who dispersed it.
She reminded them all, especially Benson Hills citizens, that kids make mistakes. It shouldn’t ruin their lives. It shouldn’t make them turn on each other.
Not when they needed each other the most right now. The party proved to be a success because the power of forgiveness remained strong. And later Lee drove some supplies to McGinty’s to help him rebuild.
They also brought along a new kitten that McGinty fell in love with right away.
THE END!
