In a momentous occasion, Queen Elizabeth has made her first major royal appearance since beginning a period of lockdown in March.
What was the cause that got Her Majesty back out into public? The 94-year-old Elizabeth chose to attend a military ceremony at Windsor Castle which was performed by the Welsh Guard.
She and her husband, 99-years old Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, have been together in isolation at Windsor observing coronavirus pandemic precautions.
How Is The Queen’s Official Birthday Being Celebrated During Lockdown?
The military event was performed following the cancellation of the annual Trooping the Colour parade. This parade normally takes place on the Queen’s “official” birthday, which in fact is two months after her actual April birthday.
Why Does Queen Elizabeth Have Two Birthdays?
Back in March Buckingham Palace announced that the yearly parade, full of pomp and circumstance, would not happen this year, “in its traditional form.”
Typically the parade necessitates hundreds of active-duty military personnel. Due to the pandemic, the logistics were just not possible nor advisable.
As to be expected, royal family members typically make it a point to attend Queen Elizabeth’s official birthday celebrations and also participate in the parade which travels down the Mall toward Buckingham Palace. Generations of royals have also been photographed watching the RAF flypast from the Palace balcony.
Unlike in years past, this year Her Majesty was the sole member of the royal family to be present at the military ceremony.

Where was Prince Philip during the ceremony? The 99-year old prince celebrated his birthday on Wednesday and it is thought that he enjoyed the event from a window with an excellent view of the military ceremony.
The Prince of Wales Is Colonel Of The Welsh Guards But He Did not Attend The Ceremony
The Welsh Guards is one of the seven regiments in the Household Division and they are estimated to have had about two weeks to prepare for the Queen’s birthday ceremony this year. This is in contrast to typically having months to prepare for the epic event known as Trooping the Colour.

There was another difference in play and that had to do with coronavirus precautions. Typically soldiers are standing about an arm’s length from each other while performing, but this is not allowed at this time. Also not allowed are the musician’s typical shoulder-to-shoulder stance and so both groups had to keep further than normal distances.
