Not just because they went on a couple of dates there, or maybe because it was where Meghan was living before Harry even came into the picture, but because it was where they fled to when they left the UK.

At the time, many even believed that the couple planned on settling in the country known for its brilliant maple trees.

But, whilst Harry and Meghan did their thing in Canada, they were heaping their expenses on Canadian taxpayers. And for what? Don’t worry, we’ll break it down for you.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Cost More To Protect Than Any Other Internationally Protected Persons

It took Prince Harry and Meghan Markle five years to set Canada back half a million dollars. This, as can be expected, does not stand well with Canadians.

Not only were Harry and Meghan’s costs expensive, they were even more expensive than that of any other internationally protected persons traveling to Canada within that same period, which extended from April 2015 to March 2020.

A document obtained by CBC highlights this, noting that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Security Bill Reportedly Left Canadian Taxpayers Footing the Cost

These costs come out higher than the $334,337 the RCMP published in 2021, which, at the time, was said to account “for around 10% of the over $5.2 million spent during that period to provide security to more than 100 internationally protected persons who visited Canada.”

Barack Obama, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. and former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair were among the high profile persons that visited the country within that time period, and whose costs were significantly lower than the Sussexes’.

Under international conventions, individuals on the internationally protected persons list visiting Canada are assured security, whether they’re visiting for official purposes, business, or fun.

However, most of the Sussexes’ costs could be attributed to the multiple covert trips Prince Harry made to visit then-girlfriend Meghan Markle. “We had a good five, six months almost with just privacy, which was amazing,” Meghan revealed at the time.
