With Sonny’s recent decision to leave the mob, Benard hinted at what lies ahead for the so-called ‘former’ mobster, saying, ‘When the writers informed me that I was out of the mob, I wasn’t surprised.

I thought, let’s see what I can do with this.’ He recalled that during the peak of the gangster era on GH, many viewers expressed their discontent, saying, ‘There’s too much Sonny, it’s too violent.’

Maurice Says He Doesn’t Care What Sonny’s Involved In As Long As He Remains Powerful

Nonetheless, the long-standing staple of GH expressed, “My primary concern is not what I’m involved in, as long as Sonny retains his power and influence. And that power and influence doesn’t have to involve violence or criminal activities, there are numerous ways to wield power in the business world.

You can exert influence in various areas, and I believe that’s exactly what they are accomplishing. I am aware of the upcoming storyline, and while I can’t divulge too many details, I can assure you it’s truly remarkable. When I first learned about it, my reaction was, ‘Oh, wow!'”

Maurice Celebrates 33 Years On The ABC Soap This Week

This week, Maurice celebrates his 33rd year portraying Sonny, a role he first took on August 13, 1993; but how many more years does this beloved star have left in Port Charles?

Maurice shared his thoughts on the matter, stating, “My contract is up in February or March (2027).  Until then, I can tell you that I’m really pleased with the upcoming storyline:” he continued, “I’m not planning to retire anytime soon, but I’ve reached a point where I could if I chose to.

However, as long as I’m enjoying my time at GH, which I have been for quite some time, I don’t want to. They’ll have to push me out-they’ll have to say, ‘No more, we’ve had enough. Get out of here!’”

Maurice Told Butler How He Envisions His Exit

In their chat, Butler asked Maurice how he envisions his exit from General Hospital-the veteran GH star replied that he’d want a dramatic cliffhanger. “Something happens to one of his kids, and it’s his fault. Sonny can’t handle it,” Maurice explains about his character.

“He goes home, pours a whiskey, then heads upstairs, and all you hear is BOOM; it cuts to black-in a movie, that would be perfect. But this is a soap opera; you don’t know if Sonny did it or if someone else set him up-there’s a huge story there, right?”

Here’s Who Maurice Wishes Could Come Back To The Soap

During the interview with the ESPN radio host, Benard was asked which cast member he would like to see return to the show.

He mentioned three characters: Brenda Barrett (Vanessa Marcil), Luke Spencer (the late Anthony Geary, whom Benard misses dearly), and Morgan Corinthos (last portrayed by Bryan Craig). You can listen to the full chat with Maurice on The Ty Butler Show.
