European royal family followers keep an eye on the case of Norway’s Marius Borg Høiby, who currently serves time under house arrest at Skaugum after an Oslo District Court decided on a four-week extension. Read on for more details.
Town & Country updated on the case on October 6, noting that prosecutors worried he might commit more crimes. A restraining order protecting a former girlfriend stays active as well.
Four Years Behind Bars?
According to Soap Opera Spy in February, the trial of the son of Norway’s Queen Mette-Marit was expected to last two months. The article also explained that while Marius Borg Høiby was raised with the royal household in Norway, he was never a royal and didn’t carry out royal duties.

On June 15, Reuters reported that Høiby had been sentenced to four years in prison after being convicted of two counts of rape, domestic abuse, and other offenses. He was acquitted of two other rape charges.
But there is an important factor to note. He was sentenced, but the judgment isn’t final because of his appeal.
September 10 brought a new development. Dagbladet reported that Norway’s appeals court agreed to hear his challenge against parts of the verdict.
That means his current house arrest at Skaugum is part of his continued detention while the appeal is pending. He wears an electronic monitor. while waiting.
Still Under House Arrest
People watch the royal family closely these days, especially since the scandal involving former Prince Andrew in the UK.
Prosecutors pushed for the ongoing restrictions, and Town & Country explained that his defense actually agreed to the extension.
They cited defense attorney, Alexander Greaker as saying, in part, “Høiby agrees to continued detention for four weeks. He is motivated to start working and will use this period to secure a concrete job offer.”
The Current Status Quo
On YouTube, The Royal Thread covered the ongoing saga over the weekend. However, the video claimed that Høiby is going to prison, which doesn’t tell the whole story because his appeal is still pending.
One viewer familiar with Norway’s legal system offered some useful background, explaining that Høiby had been in custody since February before being allowed to remain at Skaugum under electronic monitoring.
The commenter also pointed out, “He has appealed the sentence and is out on temporary release, but with an ankle monitor and other restrictions. We don’t have bond in Norway.”
However, Norwegian reports confirm that he remains in court-ordered detention rather than being fully released. Aftenposten reported that the Oslo District Court extended those restrictions for another four weeks.
The viewer also discussed Norway’s sentencing rules, noting that prisoners may be eligible for release after serving two-thirds of their sentences. However, that doesn’t mean Høiby will automatically be released after serving two years and eight months.
Other Viewers React
Royal family watchers dropped a lot of comments, and one of them wrote, “It is tragic all of it. But at least the Norwegian justice system has proven that all people [are] equal when it comes to the law.”
Here are a few more responses from the discussion:
- “A bad seed can show up in any family.”
- “It’s a shame that his mother didn’t ensure that he had an education and life skills to rise above and not feel needy for a royal title and privileges.”
- “Being PRIVILEGED is not a ticket to do as you wish…”
Another Court Battle Ahead
February 9, 2027 marks the next big date, and no doubt it will generate a lot of interest. Many people feel that monarchies across the UK and Europe need to take more accountability, the same as any other citizens.
