British royal family news reveals that the BBC’s Martin Bashir coached his subject Princess Diana to couch her terms about infidelity during their bombshell 1995 interview. In “honor” of the 25th anniversary of that salacious interview, three documentaries have been made including ITV’s The Diana Interview: Revenge Of A Princess.
The stunning claim about Bashir aired on that documentary in which it was purported that Diana was given direction from the interviewer about how to talk about her marital infidelity with James Hewitt.
Martin Bashir Advised Princess Diana On How To Answer His Interview Questions
The late Princess Diana’s jaw-dropping interview with Bashir riveted a nation that had not yet become accustomed to sensationalized reality tv. Her incredibly raw and honest answers did nothing less than roil the monarchy to the point that Queen Elizabeth demanded that she and Prince Charles divorced.
The documentary talked to Tony Poole, a cameraman who was in the room during the infamous interview. According to him, taping was halted to ensure that Diana was pleased with the answer she gave in regard to James Hewitt an ex-Army captain and Gulf War veteran who had a five-year fling with Diana during her marriage to Prince Charles.
At one point she said, of Hewitt, “Yes, I adored him, yes, I was in love with him.”
Tony claims that “The question Diana had a problem answering was with regards to James Hewitt, when Martin asked her, ‘Was she unfaithful?’”
“And she didn’t quite know how to phrase her answer. We stopped recording and after some discussion, she was then happy with how she would answer….”
Princess Diana’s 1995 BBC interview threatened the fabric of the staid monarchy
The cameraman confirmed that Bashir, the producer, and Diana all collaborated to craft her infamous answer about Hewitt.
The new ITV documentary also alleges that Diana suggested dropping the tell-all interview on her equally unfaithful husband’s birthday–Surprise, Prince Charles!
Editor Ian Corcoran told the documentary that Bashir suggested asking Diana herself for suitable airdate. He stated that Bashir, “slipped out of the room to phone her and a while later he came back in, he said she had suggested a date which just happened to be Prince Charles’ birthday.”
Richard Ayre, the BBC’s former head of editorial policy, inquired what date she suggested and was told it was Tuesday, November 14, unaware it was Prince Charles’ birthday.
Diana’s friend Richard Kay told the documentary, “It may be that Bashir and co said, ‘Well, we want to announce it on the 14th of November.’ And she would have said, ‘Oh, that’s my husbands’ birthday, Yes. Why not?”
