British royal family news reveals that the Royal Variety Performance will definitely have a different look and feel this year. In the past, a member of the UK’s Royal Family was the guest of honor, but this year COVID-19 restrictions and precautions prevent that tradition from happening.
Due To COVID-19 Restrictions In Place, The Royal Variety Performance Will Be Different This Year
The Royal Variety Performance debuted in 1912 and has a rich and illustrious history. Not only will there be no royal in attendance this year, but there will be no audience period.
Instead, the event is being broadcast as a virtual happening and Jason Manford will host the evening from Blackpool Opera House with a virtual audience.
In the past, senior members of the royal family took turns attending the legendary event since Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is a patron of the Royal Variety Charity.
The Cambridges Were In Attendance At The Royal Variety Performance Last Year
In 2019 the performance was attended by Prince William and Kate Middleton. The event is full of stars and celebs but of course, the royals in attendance outshine them all!
The star-studded event raises money to help and support those in the entertainment field. In addition to their 2019 attendance, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were at the event in 2014 and 2017.

For this year’s event, Prince Charles has recorded a special message of thanks for the show. The lineup will include Captain Sir Tom Moore with Michael Bail, and the duo will sing their version of, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
Also scheduled to appear virtually are Gary Barlow, Spice Girl member Melanie C. and, “Britain’s Got Talent” 2020 winner Jon Courtenay.
The Royal Variety Performance Will Be Held Virtually This Year
Giles Cooper is the chairman of the Royal Variety Charity and he stated, “We are honored that His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales has recorded a message of support for our charity, which continues to assist those from the world of entertainment, both young and old, since our formation in 1908.”
In 2018, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle represented the royal family at the show—we are pretty sure that won’t be happening again.
