Beyond The Gates’ Tamara Tunie Explains The Reason She Returned To Daytime Drama

Beyond The GatesBeyond the Gates’ (BTG) cast continues their whirlwind press tour as they promote the new soap both on television and social media. The show’s debut is scheduled to take place on CBS this Monday, February 24 at 2 p.m. ET.

Actress Tamara Tunie, who plays matriarch Anita Dupree, made a stop at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on the evening of February 19, to talk more about BTG, and revealed the one thing that made her decide to return to the land of daytime drama.

Tamara Tunie’s Reason Why

Tunie is an accomplished actress, with not only a past in daytime drama but also roles in primetime.

She played Dr. Melinda Warner on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, as well as Alberta Green on 24, Monica Graham on Blue Bloods, and Lillian Fancy on NYPD Blue – just to name a few of her past projects.

In addition, fans may remember her as Cissy Houston in the 2022 biography film, ‘Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody’.

When the discussion turned to BTG, Colbert asked the actress what it meant to be on the groundbreaking soap, considering this was the first daytime drama in 25 years to premiere on television.

Tunie tells Cobert, “The only show that would bring me back to daytime television was this show.” She goes on to say, “It’s because it is historic in its existence.

It is the first daytime drama where the central family is African American, and an African American family of affluence, power, generational wealth, beauty, talent, and it’s breaking the color barrier.”

Tunie On Shattering The Glass Ceiling

Tunie goes on to state that BTG is a “glass-ceiling-breaking show – and I’m so proud to be a part of it”.
The actress is also no stranger to the world of soap, once playing Jessica Griffin in As the World Turns from 1987 to 2009 and had a short run on Days of Our Lives in 2011 as Judge Weston.
