The Bold And The Beautiful Spoilers – What Matthew Atkinson Said About Schizophrenia
B&B spoilers reveal that there seems to be a common consensus that Thomas (Matthew Atkinson) has paranoid schizophrenia. It came after the actor spoke to TV Insider. While he did suggest that Thomas has a severe mental illness, he didn’t explicitly say it was schizophrenia. But for the sake of argument, let’s go over Atkinson’s exact quote,
“I had a conversation with a psychologist about what people suffering from paranoid schizophrenia experience. I’m trying to tell the story from this character and give it as much credence as possible.”
So, that sounds like Atkinson wanted to find out what it’s like for someone to experience auditory hallucinations and one of the common reasons is a mental illness, such as schizophrenia.
B&B Spoilers – Hallucinations Have Various Causes
Plus, people need to remember that many things can cause auditory hallucinations and Thomas is lacking the other symptoms from the DSM-IV for a schizophrenia diagnosis. Of course, this is a soap opera, so anything could happen. Head trauma, brain tumors, cancer, dehydration, even people with autism reportedly experience hallucinations, according to Sheffield Autism Research Lab.
Now, we aren’t saying Thomas has autism or is just dehydrated. We just want people not to automatically assume hearing voices means schizophrenia. On the other hand, soaps don’t really put a lot of thought into making storylines realistic either, so schizophrenia could very well be the plot of this story.
The Bold And The Beautiful Spoilers – Don’t Rule Out Mental Illness, Though
The Bold and the Beautiful spoilers reveal that Atkinson did confirm that Thomas is suffering from a severe mental illness. This isn’t surprising considering his extreme obsession with Hope. Now, whether the hallucinations are a symptom of that particular disorder or not has not been confirmed. And of course, there are other mental illnesses besides schizophrenia that cause hearing voices, such as PTSD, bipolar disorder, and even some patients with major depression.
B&B Spoilers – Head Trauma
When Thomas bumped his head on the desk, it set off these hallucinations. He didn’t seem to be hearing voices before that and if so, it wasn’t really played out on-screen. Now, normally hallucinations would require a blunt force trauma, like what happens in a terrible accident or one being brutally attacked. He didn’t seem to hit his head that hard, but it’s more important about where he hit it.
Plus, Dr. John Finnegan (Tanner Novlan) is picking up on other symptoms, like him being “out of it,” him lashing out one minute and being friendly the next, as well as being “stuck in his head.” It very well could be a concussion that is causing all of this.
What do you think? Did the bump on the head from the desk cause hallucinations? Or could Thomas really have undiagnosed schizophrenia?
