Coronation Street Boss Says Geoff Metcalfe’s Controlling Behavior Bound To Get Worse

“Coronation Street” boss Iain MacLeod revealed that Geoff Metcalfe’s (Ian Bartholomew) controlling behavior is about to become much worse. The showrunner added that upcoming episodes will explore the different aspects of this important social issue. He hopes that the story gives hope to viewers and have a positive impact on how they deal with their loved ones.

MacLeod Explains Geoff’s Behavior

Viewers may recall that Geoff has taken control of the many different aspects of Yasmeen Nazir’s (Shelley King) life. He recently tried to convince her that she’s an alcoholic. He got his hands on her bank accounts and made sure that she stays indoors. Aside from that, he’s been tormenting his wife for several months now. He’s cut her off from her friends, ridicules her, and even spies on her.

The scenes were a bit too much for some viewers as the issue hit a little too close to home but there are also those who believe that the story is relevant and needs to be talked about.

MacLeod explained that Geoff’s pattern of behavior is the type that ends only when it is already too late and the victim has become completely “imprisoned.”

The imprisonment suffered by the victim is in a literal sense. The abuser will control the victim’s access to money. The latter can’t leave the house anytime he or she wants and can’t see whomever they want. Even their eating habits and scheduled are being controlled.

The Corrie boss promises that the upcoming scenes will explore all these things, as viewers see Geoff tighten his hold on Yasmeen.

“Controlling behavior is a spectrum and I really hope that, at the less insidious end, the storyline will have a positive effect on viewers’ attitudes to their loved-ones,” he said.

“And at the more serious end, where Geoff is headed, I hope it will give people at home who are in abusive relationships the courage and insight to get out before it’s too late,” he added.

“On the evidence of the letters I have already been receiving, I truly believe this will be the case,” he continued.

Will Yasmeen find help? Or will it all be too late before Geoff gets his comeuppance?

The show has revealed Geoff and Yasmeen’s coercive control abuse storyline back in June. The sudser has consulted with a domestic abuse charity to make sure that they correctly represent this sensitive topic.
