Coronation Street star Maureen Lipman has achieved a great award in Corrie’s history as the first actress to receive a damehood or knighthood from the British Empire.
The 75-year-old actress received the honor from the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, at Windsor Castle. She’s named a Dame Commander for services to charity, entertainment, and the arts.
The legendary actress has been a fan favorite for playing Tyrone Dobbs’ (Alan Halsall) spirited grandmother, Evelyn Plummer, since 2018, although she first appeared in the soap in 2002 as Return landlady Lillian Spencer.
“I am proud to be honoured by the Queen and country that I love, for doing the work that I love,” the actress said.
Prince Charles took over the investiture ceremony as the 95-year-old monarch, her highness, Elizabeth II, was advised by her medical team to rest for a few days after engaging in dozens of appointments since the start of the month. Buckingham Palace made the announcement on October 20 that her highness had “regretfully” decided to adhere to the advice.
‘Coronation Street’ Star Maureen Lipman Reveals She Raided Corrie Wardrobe
The stylish actress confessed to raiding Corrie’s wardrobe department just to find a hat to wear for the important ceremony. She said that she heard about the award in 2020 and still can’t believe it.
“And so the coat you bought becomes like something you don’t want to wear. Then it becomes, ‘What the heck do I wear on my head?’” she admitted.
Dame Maureen had to go to “Coronation Street” to look for a fascinator and fortunately, they gave her seven. She traveled back from Manchester to have her friends criticize her fashion style. But she completely “blew” it in the morning of the ceremony and “changed her mind.”
Although already 75, the actress is still in vogue and flaunted her long patterned coat matched by her red heels and perfected by her black fascinator.

‘Coronation Street’ Star Maureen Lipman Claims Art Therapy Helps Her Move On
Although the actress is back on our screens, she’s still processing the death of her partner, Guido Castro, at the start of the year due to the coronavirus, while staying in a care home suffering from Parkinson’s.
In her interview with Mirror last week, Dame Maureen admitted there are nights that he can’t sleep. But she’s found art therapy to be really beneficial, and that has helped her cope with the loss.
“It is therapeutic. I still paint him – I still often find myself doodling his face. I just painted him and painted him and painted him until I got it out of my system,” she shared.
Guido was her partner for 13 years as her husband, Corrie writer Jack Rosenthal, passed away in 2004. “I don’t think about anything except how lucky I was to have had two such wonderful men.”
