Mr. Lowrie’s Publicist Confirmed The News Of His Passing

Philip Lowrie, a cherished star of Coronation Street and one of its original cast members, has sadly passed away at the age of 88, as confirmed by his publicist. The actor, who hailed from Lancashire, died on Friday, according to Mario Renzullo.

In a heartfelt statement, Mr. Renzullo expressed, “My dear friend and client, Philip Lowrie, known for his iconic portrayal of Dennis Tanner on Coronation Street, left us yesterday at 88 years old.

His passing signifies the close of a significant chapter in the history of the world’s longest-running soap opera, where he played a pivotal role in shaping its narrative.”

That leaves William Roache, who still portrays Ken Barlow on a regular basis as the only original living cast member of the iconic soap opera.

Philip Lowrie’s Portrayal Of Dennis Tanner Made Television History

At the age of 24, Mr. Lowrie etched his name in television history by debuting in the inaugural episode of Coronation Street back in 1960. He took on the role of Dennis Tanner, son of the beloved Elsie Tanner, played by Pat Phoenix.

His charmingly rebellious nature and tumultuous relationships quickly earned him a spot in the hearts of viewers, remaining on the series until 1968 before making a sensational comeback to the cobbles in 2011.

In September 2011, Mr. Lowrie was recognized with a Guinness World Record for holding the longest hiatus between appearances on television as the same character in the same series.

Mr. Lowrie then remained on Corrie until 2014, leaving the cobbles along with Sue Johnston, who played Dennis’ girlfriend at the time, Gloria Price.

A Short Biography Of Philip Lowrie

Hailing from Ashton-under-Lyne in Lancashire, he pursued his training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, thanks to his mother’s efforts to fund his education.

Following his graduation, he made his West End debut in Farewell, Farewell Eugene, sharing the stage with notable talents like Margaret Rutherford and Peggy Mount.

Mr. Lowrie also became a familiar face on Victoria Wood’s television programs, featuring in All Day Breakfast, As Seen on TV, Wood and Walters, among others.

A truly adaptable actor, he took on numerous prominent stage roles, such as Major Metcalf in The Mousetrap (2004), Klever in The Case of the Frightened Lady (2018), and Eric in The Lady Vanishes (2019).
