Coronation Street Spoilers: Sally Ann Matthews Happy With Johnny’s Death

Coronation Street; Sally Ann Matthews Coronation Street star Sally Ann Matthews has spoken about why she’s happy with Johnny Connor’s death for her on-screen character Jenny’s love story.

Corrie’s Super Soap Week ended tragically with the iconic Johnny Connor (Richard Roland Hawley) untimely death when he plunged into the depths to rescue his estranged wife Jenny (Sally Ann Matthews) after falling into the sinkhole.

Even before his last breath, Johnny confessed he still loves her and Jenny confirmed she still feels the same so she needed him to hold on, but Johnny had spent all of his strength that he drowned before rescuers came.

Talking to Inside Soap, actress Matthews has explained why she’s happy with how Johnny and Jenny’s love story concluded despite the tragedy that led to her on-screen partner’s death.

“It told their love story and brought it full circle. He gave her the opportunity to have a different life when she was just a cleaner in the factor, and he was her knight in shining armour ’till the very end,” she said.

The actress pointed out Johnny’s unique exit to how often characters leave in the back of a taxi: “Yet no one is going to float away down a storm pipe again in Corrie history.”

Not only is the actress happy about Johnny’s death but also the portrayer himself, Richard Hawley has claimed he’s “overjoyed” when he learned about how Johnny will exit the ITV Soap.

“I was absolutely overjoyed and knocked back by what he [Iain the producer] was planning because for me it is the completion of a great love story, which is what Sally Ann and I had wanted,” he explained.

“You can’t get a truly great love story until it is over, until someone dies.”

‘Coronation Street’ — Jenny Spirals Down After Johnny’s Death

Although Sally claimed Johnny’s death was of perfection, the actress revealed it’s the opposite for her on-screen character, Jenny, and that she’ll go through “very up and down”.

The actress explained Jenny wants to find the perfect words for his eulogy and she’s doubtful that she perfected it.

“Jenny’s beating herself over leaving the marriage, as she did love Johnny, so she doesn’t want to let him down,” she revealed.

At Johnny’s funeral, Jenny’s emotions run high and she will be seen swigging bottles, which will concern Johnny’s daughter, Carla (Alison King).

When she gets drunk, she also gets into a fight with her adoptive daughter Daisy Midgeley (Charlotte Jordan) after knowing she’s the sole benefactor of Johnny’s last will and testament, claiming that Daisy did nothing to deserve the money. Will this create an enormous gap between the mother and child?
