The actor recalled he was only 18 years old when he came out of the closet after appearing in the multi-award-winning “Shakespeare In Love” in 1998. The actor even won a “Screen Actors Guild Award” for his performance as Sam Gosse in the movie.
But coming out in the 1990s wasn’t smooth sailing as warned by his management in Los Angeles due to its risks for his career, and it cost him more in the end.
“I stopped being screen-tested for the heterosexual male leads and I was either the gay best friend or the character parts,” Daniel looked back on. The actor emphasized it was more in America than in Britain, “but it was still very prevalent.”
“I pretend for a living, I didn’t want to pretend in my private life. When you spend your life on screen, it’s important to hold on to the bits that are real,” he told the Daily Mirror.

Todd’s schemes, which fractured Billy’s previous relationship with Paul Winter (Peter Ash), will be finally exposed in upcoming episodes.
Paul gets the best revenge when he uses his laptop to play Todd’s confession video filmed by Todd’s accomplice Will (Ben Hackett) at the charity calendar’s launch party in Victoria Gardens.
In the video, Todd boasts how he successfully manipulated the situation in order to have Billy on his side.
Coronation Street Spoilers – Billy Mayhew Is Devasted
“Billy is devastated and humiliated when he finds out. As duplicitous as Todd has always been with other characters, he was never like that with Billy,” he hinted, acknowledging that Todd did everything because his feelings for Billy were genuine.
“[Todd] wanted him (Billy) back, but he of course went about it in the wrong way.”
Although the soap star cost him his Hollywood career for his confession, he said he couldn’t be happier at Corrie.
“I love it at Coronation Street. For the first time in my life, I’m not chasing the next job.” He admitted he wanted to continue playing Billy even in his 70s as long as he’s still happy.
