But one Coronation Street star, Mikey North, is defending the show and producer Kate Oates decision to tackle some subjects that other shows wouldn’t even dare come across.
In a new interview with Britain’s The Sun, Mikey came to Kate Oates’ defense, saying that he loves the storylines, despite the viewer backlash. Some of the more controversial scenes have included Pat Phelan’s multiple murders, Michelle Connor’s stalking ordeal and now David Platt’s sexual assault.

Mikey said, “My favorite period has been the last two years – under Kate,” he said when asked what his favorite time in the show was. It has turned my time around here, I have been getting better storylines. So I suppose I’ve saved the best till last of my 10 years here.”
What’s more, Mikey also says that even though viewers have expressed their disappointment online, people are still tuning in to the soap, and now more than ever before.
Mike added, “Corrie’s ratings are higher than ever, so if this storyline has turned some people off, it has turned other people on. I think it is the younger viewers that are turning on, so I think Corrie is starting to appeal to a broader audience, but that audience is bigger than ever.”
