For PEOPLE’s latest issue, the stars opened up about the ups and downs of their marriage, especially the comfort of finding strength in one another during sad days.
Tim McGraw And Faith Hill Chat About Their 25 Years Of Marriage
Tim McGraw and Faith Hill looked back on their over two decades of marriage during their latest PEOPLE interview and it’s so easy to see that these superstars have got the loving and mutual understanding part of marriage down.
“We just feel fortunate and blessed and grateful for our kids and all the things we’ve gone through, the ups and downs,” Tim McGraw, 54, told PEOPLE in this week’s cover story, talking about the family he and wife Faith Hill have built together.
Like everything in life, their marriage has seen happy days and sad days, and they’ve always supported each other through it all, including when Hill’s father Tedd Perry passed away in 2019.
“It was a long passing,” explained Hill, 54, whose mother, Edna, had died in 2016. “It’s difficult to lose parents just a couple of years apart and watch them pass right in front of you. My dad had Lewy body dementia and it was difficult to watch a man you know be someone that you don’t recognize.”
Faith acknowledged that it was easier to bear with the grief of losing her father because of Tim, who was by her side during the gloomy days. She also applauded her husband for his closeness to her father and for being there with him during his last moments.
“My dad adored Tim and Tim would visit him daily,” she remembered. “He was so present for the passing of both my parents. You reveal yourself when you are going through struggles and that’s just another layer of partnership.”
Tim McGraw On Overcoming His Battle With Drinking
The strength of their support for each other went a long way in helping Tim McGraw, whose father, Tug McGraw, died in 2004 (his mother turned 73 as of recent), fight his dependence on alcohol over the years.
“It’s always a struggle. It’s never not a struggle,” said McGraw, who turned to his wife for help confronting his drinking problem 13 years ago and has lived a healthier life since. “Those demons always come back. But you always have a partner that’s willing to fight them with you. We made a commitment to each other a long time ago that we’re not going to give up. It’s too easy to give up.”
Fans will get to see the couple appear in a movie together for the first time in Yellowstone’s Prequel “1883”, premiering on Paramount+ on December 19.
As for the reason behind their strong and loving marriage, the couple revealed that dedication is the key.
“When you love someone, you commit to be there for them for the highs, the lows, anytime,” Hill advised. “You face the struggles.”
