‘9-1-1’ Boss Tim Minear Reveals They Considered Bringing Connie Britton’s Character Back For ‘9-1-1’ Spinoff

'9-1-1' Boss Tim Minear Reveals They Considered Bringing Connie Britton's Character Back For '9-1-1' Spinoff When fans hear that a new ‘9-1-1’ spinoff has been given a straight-to-series order by ABC, I’m sure it’ll be happiness all around.

Sure there’ll be some names that fans will have in their head as to which characters can return to make this spinoff a special one, but the one name I think we can all agree on to appear in the new series is Connie Britton.

Will Connie Britton Lead the New ABC ‘9-1-1’ Spinoff?

Fans would likely recognize Connie Britton for her roles as dispatcher Abigail Clark on the first season of ‘9-1-1’ and country music icon Rayna James in ABC’s ‘Nashville’ from 2012 to 2018.

If you know her, you’d know she’s a shoo-in to appear in Ryan Murphy, Tim Minear, and Rashad Raisani’s upcoming ‘9-1-1: Nashville.’ And guess what? The showrunner agrees.

In a recent interview, showrunner Tim Minear told Decider that he and his team have certainly discussed ways to bring Britton back.

“Yeah, actually!” Minear confirmed with a laugh. “Her name came up yesterday, and I’m like, ‘Maybe we just bring that character back to life? We just say Abby has a twin sister, and we thought she was dead, but she’s really not!’”

Whilst promoting her recent Netflix series ‘Zero Day,’ ‘9-1-1′ star and “9-1-1: Nashville’ Executive Producer Angela Bassett confirmed that the door is always open for a Britton comeback. She said: “It’s always like, Connie, open door, whenever you want to come back.”

Tim Minear On Why A Particular ‘9-1-1’ Parallel Didn’t Work

While the last physical appearance for Britton’s Abigail Clark character may have been in a two-episode arc in Season 3, her name has come up in conversation several times throughout the series.

One of the most notable being the Season 8 revelation that Buck’s ex-boyfriend Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.) was once engaged to Abby. Drama, right?

According to Minear, Britton’s character was name-dropped in Season 8, Episode 9’s script as well. This, however, did not open the doors for a Britton return.

“[The parallels] did [cross my mind], and I had even made reference to it later, but that ended up falling out,” Minear told Decider about his 809 callback. “I think it just got a little confusing for the network. But there was a reference to that fact. For Buck, it’s different, because he’s not Eddie’s lover, for one thing. He was pining for Abby when she left. But he didn’t think he was living in her place. He thought he was waiting for her to come back.”

“I’m glad you noticed it, because I did, too,” Minear continued. “What’s different here is Buck staying in Abby’s place meant he was expecting Abby to come back. Him thinking of taking over Eddie’s lease means that he’s resigned himself to the fact that Eddie is not coming back.”
