Tim Allen Returns To ABC With Comedy Show ‘Shifting Gears’

Tim Allen is going to be returning to ABC in a new comedy show. The network recently greenlit the series that will see Allen star as a widower and owner of a classic car restoration business whose adult daughter (Kat Dennings) and teenage kids move back in with him. Drama, I know right?

This will mark a return to ABC for Allen, who led the hit series ‘Home Improvement’ in the 1990s. He also appeared across six seasons of ‘Last Man Standing,’ which later moved to Fox channel for its final three seasons.

Although Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully (The Simpsons, Duncanville) wrote and ran the pilot, they have decided to exit the series.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, their exit was amicable and they will be credited as executive producers on the pilot. They continue to be in business with ‘Shifting Gears’ producer 20th Television. The series is currently searching for a new showrunner.

At the moment, while production is expected to begin late 2024 to mid 2025, a premiere date is yet to be announced.

I’m sure Allen would feel comfortable leading ABC’s new comedy, especially since he spent years making hit shows for the network.

In one of his most popular shows, ‘Home Improvement,’ Allen played the role of Tim Taylor. Per the show’s description, “Tim Taylor is a successful TV show host but takes a backseat at home where his domineering wife Jill runs the show while they raise their three sons who are always up to some mischief.”

At the time of its run, it was not a huge hit with critics. Nevertheless, it was widely beloved by the audience, was one of the most-watched sitcoms of that time and won multiple awards. It had a total of 208 half-hour episodes spanning eight seasons.

While this may not be ‘Home Improvement,’ fans can’t completely say that there isn’t some similarities between the two, so I guess it’s the closest thing to the 90s sitcom we’ll be getting.
