Adele’s Song Banned In Brazil For This Reason

Adele's Song Banned In Brazil For This ReasonAdele’s song, ‘Million Years Ago,’ is a powerful ballad about missing the things you enjoyed and loved when you were younger.

Sadly, people in Brazil will no longer get to take a trip down memory lane with the emotional song because it has been banned nationwide in a ruling made by Judge Victor Torres.

If the song is played in any capacity within the country, the Brazilian subsidiaries of Adele’s labels, Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music, will be required to pay a fine of $8,000. To be clear, that is $8,000 per default. So if the song is played 10 times, Sony and Universal Music will be ordered to pay $80,000. Weird, ain’t it?

Brazilian Songwriter Accuses Adele of Plagiarism

Following a plagiarism filing by Toninho Geraes, British singer-songwriter Adele has been found to have stolen elements from Martinho Da Vila’s samba classic ‘Mulheres’ by Rio de Janeiro’s Sixth Commercial Court.

This led to the filing of an injunction that restricts the distribution of the song in the country on Friday. Adele’s labels, Sony and Universal Music can contest the ruling if they wish.

Adele’s ‘Million Years Ago’ Was Inspired By Her Longing For Moments From Her Youth

Adele co-wrote the song, ‘Million Years Ago,’ with producer Greg Kurstin. It was featured on her third studio album ’25,’ which also spawn other successful singles such as ‘Hello’ and ‘When We Were Young.”

Speaking on the inspiration behind it, Adele told Graham Norton that it was inspired by the longing for what once was.

She said: “It’s kind of a story about … I drove past Brockwell Park, which is a park in South London I used to live by. It’s where I spent a lot of my youth. It has quite monumental moments of my life that I’ve spent there, and I drove past it and I just literally burst into tears.”

She further explained, “I really missed it, for no other reason than we’ve all got different things going on and it’s got nothing to do with me not feeling like I can’t go and sit in there and drink a bottle of cider anymore … it’s more that life happens, so I’ve got no one to meet there.”

“That’s basically what it is,” she continued. “And it’s just sort of about that, and about [how] I never realized that this was going to happen. I never, ever realized when I had my guitar in the park, singing to my friends … we never in a million years thought this would ever happen.”

In the song, Adele remembers sweet childhood moments “flashing by,” “And all I can do is watch and cry / I miss the air, I miss my friends / I miss my mother, I miss it when / Life was a party to be thrown / But that was a million years ago.”
