Al Pacino Reveals Reason He Never Takes Home Souvenirs From His Movies
Imagine starring in some of the biggest movies on the planet and not taking away a single thing from it. Yup, that’s Al Pacino for you.
According to the actor, who’s spent several decades of his life starring in hit movies, he doesn’t bother to take home anything from his movies; not the ‘Godfather’ cane or the ‘Scarface’ suit.
“I’ll probably lose them,” Pacino said, explaining his reason for doing so as down to his constant moves between properties. “For a long while, I used to bop from one place to another. I always was a bit of a gypsy.” Pacino has long split his time between his New York home and his California mansion.
However, he did keep some valuable memorabilia from his ‘Scarface’ movie era, and that is the homemade Oscars trophy fans gifted him after the Academy snubbed his performance in the iconic movie.
Speaking on receiving the trophy, he remembered how some fans came to see him on the set of David Mamet’s ‘American Buffalo’ in San Francisco.
“It was just around the time the awards were coming out, the Oscars were coming out and I didn’t get nominated,” Pacino said. “So the fans out there, they used to wait for me when a show was over. They all got together and gave me this huge Oscar. I thought, ‘My God.’ I still have it at my house.”
“It was huge, proportionately huge compared to the real Oscar. You know what I’m saying? So I was stunned by that. I was very happy with that,” he added of the gesture.
Even though Pacino had been nominated for five Academy Awards prior to the time ‘Scarface’ came out, he was yet to win in a single category.
This, however, doesn’t mean that the legendary actor is devoid of Oscars, as he beat out Clint Eastwood (Unforgiven), Robert Downey Jr. (Chaplin), Denzel Washington (Malcolm X) and Stephen Rea (The Crying Game) to win the Best Actor Oscar for 1992’s ‘Scent of a Woman.’
