Rust Movie Forensic Report Offers New Details
A new forensic report explores allegations that Alec Baldwin played a role in the death of Rust film cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
And the report via People focuses on the trigger of the prop Colt .45 revolver that contained live rounds. Based on the evidence, the investigation alleges that someone pulled the trigger “sufficiently” enough to cause the accident.
“Although Alec Baldwin repeatedly denies pulling the trigger, given the tests, findings and observations reported here, the trigger had to be pulled or depressed sufficiently to release the fully cocked or retracted hammer of the evidence revolver,” notes the firearms report.
The State of New Mexico hired experts Lucien Haag and Mike Haag to author the report as part of its case against Hannah Gutierrez-Reed. And the report continues, “This fatal incident was the consequence of the hammer being manually retracted to its fully rearward and cocked position followed, at some point, by the pull or rearward depression of the trigger.”
The tragedy began in October 2021. Baldwin held the gun on the New Mexico set of the Rust movie when it discharged.
As a result, the shooting wounded writer-director Joel Souza and killed Hutchins, 42. And the Santa Fe County District Attorney’s Office then charged Baldwin, 65, with two counts of involuntary manslaughter.
Alec Baldwin Could Face Charges
However, the charges were dismissed without prejudice in April. But in a June court filing, prosecutors Kari Morrissey and Jason Lewis cautioned that Baldwin could face charges based on a continuing investigation.
And the prosecutors explained, “The gun and broken sear have been sent to the state’s independent expert for further testing.
The charges against Alec Baldwin were dismissed without prejudice because a possible malfunction of the gun significantly effects causation with regard to Baldwin, not with regard to Gutierrez.
If it is determined that the gun did not malfunction, charges against Mr. Baldwin will proceed.”
But by reassembling the gun, investigators found it functioned “properly and in accordance with the operational design of original Colt 1873 single-action revolvers.” And a forensic report in August 2022 alleged that Baldwin pulled the trigger. However, the Rust actor-producer denied that. And he insisted, “The trigger wasn’t pulled. I didn’t pull the trigger. I would never point a gun at someone and pull the trigger on them, never.”
