Alec Baldwin, the renowned actor best known for his roles in 30 Rock and Beetlejuice, is determined to uncover the truth behind the tragic shooting incident on the set of Rust in October 2021.
Although the involuntary manslaughter charges against him were dismissed earlier this year, Baldwin has expressed a commitment to revealing what he believes are untold aspects of the case.
On October 21, 2021, the incident happened during a rehearsal for the Western film Rust on a church set. Baldwin’s revolver accidentally discharged, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounded director Joel Souza. Baldwin has repeatedly claimed that he did not pull the trigger, which is key to his argument.
A Continued Legal And Personal Struggle
While Baldwin is no longer facing criminal charges, the actor remains embroiled in several civil lawsuits filed by crew members and Hutchins’ family.
Speaking on David Duchovny’s Fail Better podcast, Baldwin described the next stage of his journey as a determined effort to “expose what really happened” on the Rust set.
“There’s more to come,” Baldwin said. “But the more to come is now my effort, and it’s going to be undeniably a successful effort, to raise and to expose what really happened. I was counterpunching. I was on the defensive. I was being accused. I was being indicted.”
Media Coverage And Public Reaction
Baldwin criticized the media’s handling of the incident, alleging that stories favorable to his defense were suppressed while negative narratives were amplified. “This has been for three years. And the truth of what happened has never been told, never,” he remarked.
The actor also discussed the intense backlash he has faced, describing it as akin to being “canceled.”
“In this country, when people hate you on that level, they want three things,” Baldwin said. “They want you to die, they want you to go to prison, and they want you canceled. Being canceled is like being in prison or dead because you roam the earth and you’re invisible.”
The Legal Fallout For Others
The case has seen significant legal developments for others involved. Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the film’s armorer, was sentenced to 18 months in prison after being found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.
First assistant director David Halls, who pleaded guilty to negligent use of a firearm, was sentenced to probation.
Baldwin’s own charges were dismissed with prejudice in July 2024, ensuring they cannot be refiled. However, he noted that the absence of a full trial left many details undisclosed. “There’s so much of this case that is not known because we didn’t have a full trial,” he said.
Focusing on Family And The Future
For now, Baldwin is taking a step back from the public discussion of the Rust shooting to focus on his family. He shares seven children with his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, who he said suffered greatly throughout the legal proceedings.
“For now, I want all things ‘Rust’ to just leave my windshield, so I can go and do other things and be a father to my children,” Baldwin shared on the podcast. He plans to revisit the matter in the coming months, adding, “I do believe that, by the communications I’ve had lately, things are coming back my way to work.”
Despite his personal trials, Baldwin remains steadfast in his quest to reveal the truth about the Rust tragedy, vowing to make a compelling case in the legal arena in the near future.
