Alec Baldwin is free from all charges relating to the fatal “Rust” shooting— at least for now.
The infamous shooting happened on Oct. 21, 2021, during the filming of Alec Baldwin’s movie “Rust” at Bonanza Creek Ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
The shooting which claimed the life of cinematographer Halynia Hutchins on the Rust set had Alec Baldwin who held the gun when it fired, and armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter on January 19, 2023.
The following month February, the gun enhancement charges for both Baldwin and Reed which would have earned them 5 years in jail were dropped.
On Thursday, April 20, ABC News announced to the world that the charges first brought against actor Alec Baldwin, 65, in January have been dropped, however, the same cannot be said for armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed.
Alec Baldwin — Proper Investigation Is Being Conducted On The Case
According to the statement released by Alec’s attorneys Luke Nikas and Alex Spiro that Thursday, a decision to make “proper investigation” on the case was reached.
“We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the case against Alec Baldwin and we encourage a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic accident,” said Luke and Alex.
Furthermore, Prosecutors Kari T. Morrissey and Jason J. Lewis also revealed that the recent coming to light of fresh “facts” relating to the case fueled the decision to drop Alec’s charges and look deeply before leaping.
“New facts were revealed that demand further investigation and forensic analysis in the case against Alexander “Alec” Rae Baldwin, III. Consequently, we cannot proceed under the current time constraints and on the facts and evidence turned over by law enforcement in its existing form.”
“We therefore will be dismissing the involuntary manslaughter charges against Mr. Baldwin to conduct further investigation.”
They further explained that this does not mean Alec has been exonerated of criminal culpability, “This decision does not absolve Mr. Baldwin of criminal culpability and charges may be refiled. Our follow-up investigation will remain active and on-going.”
Alec is expected to appear in court for the preliminary hearing on May 3. It will last for two weeks to determine if there’s evidence that’ll lead to prosecution.
